I think you are missing the stop in your water system. A full stop should improve things immeasurably. Then I would top up with some Comma fluid.HTH

Hi Sam,
You do not need a full stop bearing. I would take your car to a trusted friend/ colleague/ family member and ask them to take a look for you or take it to a garage for you.
Alternatively, what have the original garage said about the ineffective repair?
If you are loosing that much coolant I would get this looked at sooner rather than later - it has the potential to damage the engine without attention.

It was my husbands Freinds mate who is a mechanin he don’t want anything to do with it as when he done the job he must have accidently unplugged a wire which meant my lights wasn’t working as cuz I pestered him to take a quick look he now wants nothing to do with the car sounds a bit dodgy for my liking but my husband won’t have it to be it’s being taken to a garage on sat as I’m clueless as so is husband Thankyou
As Steve says. The expansion tank design tends to split down the mold seam, it's especially prone to failing on the S model as it's pressurized, but the normal Cooper can fail too. If a stone has hit the radiator, it can hole it, or rot sets in around the base.
Also look under the oil filler cap for a white waxy deposit; this would mean the water was getting into the oil system and indicate a failed head gasket.
If the mechanic didn't bleed air out of the system, it might go down quite a bit as the air moves around. If you refill and it goes down again then you've got a problem. I assume it wasn't dropping quickly prior to the overheating issue and thermostat change?
Keep it topped up until the garage take a look. In this weather use a premix antifreeze (easier to carry in the boot), and avoid tap water as that can cause problems longer term especially in hard water areas.

Hi,
I have had a similar experience recently with the girlfriends car and plan to fix it next week.
I changed the water pump after finding the leak was around the OS front wheel, but the leak continued.
I have now isolated the cause to be a cracked in the water pipe that runs across the back of the engine linking the thermostat housing and water pump.
