I am very confused on what oil to buy for my 07 plate Cooper Clubman. There seems to be a huge variation in price and some oils seem to be specific for a particular brand of car. Being on a tight budget isn't helping and I want to buy the least expensive oil that is suitable for my car. Any suggestions?

Don't put rubbish oil in a car if you're using the long service interval, the oil should be LL04 specification 5w30 or the better 0w30 which is only about £15 for a litre top up at BMW which is Shell Helix Ultra in the bottle, or you can get in a Shell forecourt for over £20 a litre if you want to waste money.

Or try Opie Oils or look out for offers at Euro Car Parts. I run mine on Shell Helix and change it every 12 months which is around 2000 miles.

5w 40 fully synthetic if it’s a Cooper D.

The long service intervals are a con, they were introduced to keep the TLC cost down for the dealers, on my R55 Cooper D I change the oil and filter about every 7,000 miles especially as the oil also lubricates the turbo.
