2014 f56 cooper key fob problem

My wife has a 2014 f56 cooper, this morning when she went leave for work the key fob wouldn?t open the doors by remote. So she went and got her spare key which also wouldnt work.
Me being away from home with work told her to change the batteries, so today she has had both batteries replaced and it still wont operate.
She can open the car with the key and it will start if she holds the fob up to the steering column.
Has anyone encountered this before ?
I find it unusual that its happened to both keys ( makes me think it must be the car ).
The car has only just ran out of warranty 4 weeks ago which is annoying.
Any help would be much appreciated
