So for the past few months the mini has been running very rough, when I start it up if I don't manually keep the revs up, the car can stall even though I am not in gear. I rev it for a few minutes then I can pull off without it stalling. When driving it can noticeably rough, where at idle the car is chugging and at this point it can go into limp mode unless I keep the revs up.

The other area that it struggles with is when I floor it, usually in 3rd, 4th or 5th gear, when it hits around 3000 RPM, there is a loud clicking noise and I lose all power, then there is a big amount of oil smoke out the back before the power returns.

I took it to a local unofficial 'mini specialist' but they aren't really suggesting anything to fix the issue.

It's a 56 plate Mini Cooper S (r56).

Any ideas what this could be, should I just go directly to Mini?

You're looking at around £400 fitted from a main dealer for a new one.

In 4 nearly of owning our 2010 MCS, this is the only fault it has had (bar a cheap parking sensor fix).

Before replacing expensive components you need to get a proper diagnosis. Have you connected a fault code reader or better still get hold of Carly BMW OBD2 diagnostics. Research first and fix later is always the best approach.
