MCS R53 Wheel Upgrade - again!

Evening All,
I've just bought a 2004 MCS (R53) as our second car and realised how much fun they are!!! Its fairly standard so I'm going to do some handing and power upgrades and take it on track when the weather improves.
First task is to change heavy 17" wheels and terrible run flat tyres for something lighter and (maybe smaller) and with improved grip. Will probably go for some Team Dynamics Pro Race 1.2 with Yokohama AD08R.
Should I go for 16 or 17 inch rims? The aesthetics are less important than the handling for me so my inclination is to go for the smaller, lighter wheel - I had experience of using smaller rims on a Caterham 7 an it transformed the car. I will replace springs / dampers at a later stage.
Anyone got a view, had some good experiences?
