Need replacement 2010 Cooper engine - but from where?

Hi I'm looking for any advise on where from/whom to get & fit a replacement engine for my 2010 60 plate Cooper.
I took my car into my usual servicing garage after noticing a new engine noise (I call it the knock of doom) & they have advised it had run out of oil (no leaks and no warning lights had appeared) and that it will be cheaper to replace the engine rather than investigate the damage & repair.
Unfortunately they cannot look at the car for 3 weeks and I'd like to get the problem fixed sooner.
I'm based in Derby and wondered if anyone else has had any similar experiences or could recommend someone who could help?
I can see reconditioned and used engines on the web, mostly supplied by breakers, some come with 90 day or 12 month guarantees but haven't really got a clue what should be looking for.
