Chatting over new cars with local garage. Agreed Cooper S fills the gap between boring saloons and hyper hatches. But two question marks. What is real life mpg, and are these engines still subject to timing chain failure?

The F56 Cooper S uses an all new 2.0T engine compared to the early R56 N14 1.6T.

The later Spring 2010 and on N18 1.6T was reworked to stop the timing chain failing....apparently. We've had ours for 3 years and had no issues, it use no oil either.

35mpg after 22k miles. Mixed driving and road types / speeds.

Mine's been fine with the exception of the clutch release bearing failing at 20k, which was replaced (whole clutch, pressure plate etc) under warranty.

Generally been very happy with the car, quick enough for a daily, economical enough for me, fun to drive, well spec'd, nice interior.

Only other downside are the runflat tyres, they're st and expensive. Get 17's with normal tyres over 18's with runflats.

N18 owner here, I've had limp mode a couple of times with low fuel pressure (hpfp) but that's over a 3 year period, mines now on 56k it was on 29k when we got it. It runs with a milltek sports cat and it's filter, I have the oil changed every year and it was averaging 38mpg. It's less now as I do 3 miles per day, I love it. It always makes you smile.

We bought our N18 at 29K and its now on 56K!

HPFP has been the only failure - it kept going into limp mode for a couple of weeks.

We picked up a late 2014 F56 Cooper S auto last month. Went down to London to pick it up and averaged just shy of 50 mpg on the way back to Scotland. OH uses it and will average high 30s - low 40s on a typical commute of A roads and town driving.
Agree with the tyres - one we got came with 17" run flats and have already replaced them with 'proper' tyres and the difference is noticeable for the better - quieter, better ride and more confidence inspiring handling.
Stereo I would say is on the poor side of average so would look for one with the HK if had the option, other than that a cracking little car.
