oil pressure too low - 2008 Mini Cooper S
Discussion
Hi guys
today I was driving (quite slowly) and the bloody car warned me of oil pressure too low and that I should turn off the engine immediately. The warning came up twice within a couple of minutes. Shoudn't this car tell me if it needs engine oil ? Anyway I added a liter of oil and the message has disappeared.. I was about to drive for a couple of hours and luckily I managed to drive for 200 km without seeing any more warnings.
Before adding oil, I tried to measure the level but to be honest I couldn't really read very clearly the oil level using the deepstick...not sure if it's just me.
Anyway..is it normal that the car runs out of oil without a single warning ? I thouht there should be a warning light. I'm afraid the car was running without oil and now the engine is done..
I have had the car for just about 50 days or so....
Thanks

I don't think they have an oil level sensor, they do like to use oil though so you should really check the level regularly.
Even if you only check it every couple of weeks it should be enough.
Here's a handy video on how to check the level.

Continuing to run the car with the low oil pressure light on is not good, serious engine damage can occur hence the warning to turn off the engine.

I've been told by a Mini Service guy that the Mini doesn't have an oil level warning light.
He advised me to check oil fortnightly as it uses lots of oil and keeping it topped up helps prevent cam chain guide wear (the 'death rattle') because the guide is at the top end of the engine and suffers oil starvation if the level drops.
Good uh?

I have the same problem with the useless oil stick on the MINI. See the bottom three posts of this thread: http://www.pistonheads.com/gassing/topic.asp?h=0&a...
It doesn't help when the S can get through a litre in a thousand miles when pressing on; almost two-stroke territory.
