Dear All

Yesterday I found that my front sidelights were not working (ie position one on the headlight selector). The back lights were on, but the front were off. If I turned the selector to position two the dipped beam came on at the front and if I selected full beam, the bulb that was off came on.

So a simple fix I thought - just get new bulbs. I fitted two standard bulbs from Halfords that looked identical to the ones I removed, but the problem persists: on at the back, off at the front. I then thought it must be a fuse - and this is stretching my technical knowledge to the absolute limit - but as far as I can tell there are only two fuses for the headlights (left and right?) and no separate fuse for the sidelights.

The car is a 2005 Cooper S.

Can anyone advise me further?

I thought the sidelights were in the bumper clusters alongside the indicators, rather than the main headlamp units within the bonnet. Shown below, you can see the vertically split sidelamp/indicator design:

Aren't these the fog lights? At least, these lights come on when I use the fog light switch.

The foglights should be separate and lower down in the bumper.
Here are the locations and wattages from the user manual:

Foglight is at the bottom, sidelight is in the middle next to the indicator.

Thank you all so much - I was indeed looking at the wrong light and expecting it do something. What really confused me is that the bulbs for dipped headlights is brighter than the full beam lights, so I believed the bulb must be faulty and must do something more.

Fixed tomorrow all being well.

No worries, that's what the forum's for. How are you getting on a month into ownership?

All fixed - a real 5 minute job and now lights all round.

One month in and the car is everything I hoped it would be. I can do simple servicing tasks (lights aside), the parts are easy to get hold of, and the car makes me smile every time I drive it. The only thing to criticise is the ride around the roads of south-east England, but probably fixed with smaller wheels.
