I have a 2007 R56 cooper and it keeps stalling when the accelerator is not being pressed. Also getting awful mpg and smells right. The management light is on but it has 6 or 7 errors (can't remember them all but are o2, Maf, crank sends or etc)

So when I start the car, it usually idles high for a few minutes then gradually comes down but currently it just idles low. Then once the accelerator has been pressed, it won't idle and just stalls.

Driving off, there isn't noticeable loss of power and certainly not in safe mode but as soon as your put it into neutral the revs die off and engine cuts out. (No matter what speed) but if you catch it quick just before it stalls and re-Ingage the gear you can feel the engine starting to work again.

When you get to traffic lights and the engine stalls, start it back up to drive off and turns over once and it's started. Also when you pull off after this happens, it does kinda feel and sound like a misfire then a sudden busty of power and drives normal.

The car has done 135,000 miles and has had regular oil, filter and spark plug changes.

If anyone has any ideas what this could possibly be (I thought possibly crank position or timing chain tensioner) then my ears are open.

Thanks

Maracus

One fault that causes the revs to fluctuate (and also poor starting) is a High Pressure Fuel Pump failure.

Ours went at 45k on our LCI R56 Cooper S.

Would agree with above. My example also required a new high pressure fuel pump after similar issues. (About £300 fitted at specialist).

Agree with your two replies.

But a cheap quick 'fix' to try is the coolant temp sensor.
