I'm getting the usual runaround by my dealer re. the spec on a Cooper S hatch I'm planning to order soon.
Their lack of product knowledge is hard to believe and very irritating.
I want to know if the auto sport box is 6 or 8 speed (like the recently introduced Clubman Cooper S)
They say 6.
Is that right?

Yes it is still a 6 speed on the hatch although rumour has it it will get the 8 speed at some point - logic would dictate with the LCI which I'm guessing will arrive 2017 earliest based on previous facelift timings. Noticed that the new convertible announced last week still uses the 6 speed auto too. Having said that I have driven the 6 speed auto and was pleasently surprised as to how good it was - plus i think if planning on using the paddle shifts often it's easier to get your head around which gear to choose if you have 6 to choose from rather than 8. Given the large torque spread of the engine I wouldn't have thought the 8 speed would bring massive benefits to everyday driving.

Its still the 6 speed auto at the moment, but I dont know if there has been any confirmation on when the 8speed will go into the hatchback models.

Challo and Goatex, thanks very much for that confirmation.
I'm particularly pleased to hear that Challo was pleasantly surprised with the sport auto box.
I must admit that I've not driven an auto yet.
I will though, before I place the order.

BTW what is "LCI" ?
And do you know what the current delivery time is?
I don't want to ask the dealer because I feel they just tell you what you want to hear ....

Having done a bit more research, I think it would be sensible to put the order on hold.

A MotoringFile report a year ago says that an Aisin 8 speed auto box is due soon.

http://www.motoringfile.com/2014/09/17/exclusive-m...

In his recent Autocar review of the Clubman Cooper S, Greg Kable seems to be in no doubt that the new 8 speed box is superior to the 6 speed box. As we would expect, of course.

It's clear that the 8 speed box is in production (CCS).
Presumably the bean-counters will insist that stocks of the 6 speed are used up first on orders to unsuspecting customers before we see the 8 speed being offered in other models?

Although it's unlikely I know, someone from MINI my even read this and realise that customers like me are delaying their purchase. A fat chance!
