I have noticed these can be picked up for pennies these days, plenty of basic early model 1600's for under 2 grand. I am after a cheap run around, Is there anything to look out for? any potential big bills?

Many potential big bills.

Gearboxes, PAS systems, small bits of trim etc can cost a fortune

But they're cheap, pretty straight forward and actually quite good fun. Do it.

What are the potential big bills other than gbox and pas and how much are we talking for those?? not worried about the trim etc or something that's a bit tatty, its just a cheap run around that doesn't look like an old shed. But i will avoid if there are silly big random bills to be had.

PAS isn't a big bill, an OE pump can bought at Euro Car Parts, the gearbox is only a potential issue for Midland gearbox cars up to mid 2004 when the facelift car came out, noted by the fog lamp in the middle instead of the reverse light as an easy initial point.

Trim doesn't fail, it is either good or not at purchase, so just find the best condition car you can. Check for oil leaks and heavy clutches, the latter can mean an engine wear issue as it is commonly ignored.

They're often neglected as originally bought frequently as Uni cars for kids with no budget, bank of ma and pa etc, or later as first cars, and the same applies, so finding one that is properly clean can be a chore, but, they are a solid product, and fun.

Many now have been modified in some way, as they pass through another phase of ownership. So you have to find an original car too!

My One, which is the same engine, was at 31, and 34 remapped to slightly more than a Cooper, the S I have now was 27/8 standard, and 46 now if relaxed driving, 41 average now after last 6 tanks, mixed use, but also 250hp now. If i'd have mapped the One using the same software it would have been better.

Cooper should get between 33-40mpg
S 24-31 (less if you drive like you stole it)

Both Gen 1s
