Hi guys. After 4 years with my brilliant little Clio 182... I fancied a change. Test drove a couple of Minis, as well as a Civic Type-R & Golf GTI over a few weeks but decided the Mini was for me. Got a good deal on a mint motor smile

Just looking for general tips and modding ideas from fellow owners really! I've joined up to MiniTorque too but seeing as though I've been here for years, thought I might as well make a thread.

First plans are some new wheels and coilovers.

No pictures yet as the lady I'm buying it off took the advert off as soon as I sent over a deposit lol.

You'll fit in well at MT, they tell everyone to fit coilovers haha

I have some left I may sell, but if you intend mapping it, invest more in it and consider 1320.co.uk for their editable software BytetroniK, they will map it in front of you on a rolling road where you can see the afr. I don't believe anyone else does that, and many use a generic map which they have no idea will suit your car as precisely as the other suggested, and can't illustrate the fuelling. They also won't be able to alter traction characteristics necessarily, or eml lights that come on at high pressures.

Search as much as you can maybe, to form your own ideas and opinions, then see what others say, you get a lot of people that don't work on their own cars supporting various garages or suppliers, like me above haha. Read about them though, or Mynes in the U.S. and you'll perhaps see why.

I could take you out in my car, which appears standard everywhere. Some change intercoolers, and fit air kits that are not required for the power that is discussed, same with exhausts, so a lot is a personal thing. Even a trend, rather than a genuine interest in performance changes.

I chose to use GTT in Dorset for a pulley change, as they are the only people able or willing to fit pulleys in the same way as the factory, so have a zero failure rate. No run out, or slippage, coming apart, not that others do, but the factory did it for a reason.

Just a (correct) map will help the typical sub 30mpg they do. Mine was 27-31 @170chp, now 37-46 @250chp

I noticed that on MiniTorque lol... I like coilovers but I'm not obsessed by them!

Have been recommended 1320 & Lohan; both look good. I'm not into doing loads of power mods really, but the map sounds good. I got my Clio mapped @ Engine Dynamics (previously BB Tuning) along with exhaust/filter and to be honest it didn't feel different at all!

I shall read up lots before committing to anything smile thanks!

I don't know about Lohen personally, only from reading other threads about tuning, and they weren't able to do much with the ecu, not that long ago if I recall, now they say they can. Someone else posted something about a pulley swap, and the 'kit' they call it includes a coil and leads which is simply not required. Then I do my own stuff so it doesn't affect me, but it annoys to see people being sold 'stuff'. Apparently they have winter labour discounts, so that gets them more recommendations but any garage could do the same work.

What is the spec of your engine?
I am looking at MCS for my girlfriend to replace her mk4 Golf GTI T. My sister has a facelift mk1 and while it's fun it needs some extra power.

I 'assumed' this was going to be from an airbox, updated I/C, pulley, manifold, exhaust and map.
Are you advising that in reality all that's needed is a pully and custom map?

Brakes 1st this is a must as they are barely adequate in standard form

Then reduced pulley and airbox (Dave F)
Full Exhaust (sports cat) but dont run without a cat as minis like back pressure

You don't need the I/C, or even an exhaust, maybe not the manifold, definitely a pulley, 'and' the right map, and a JCW (intact) airbox is what I added later, but not essential for reasonable gains. The most important thing is condition of the base motor etc.

My current car is standard catback, standard I/C, GTT 17% pulley as stated above, BytetroniK Full Access software as hinted to above, JCW airbox with ITG filter, lower disc omitted, standard cylinder head, modified camshaft, 550cc injectors, aftermarket header re-aligned, and modified for third sensor, Innovate wide band gauge in cup holder, NGK BKR7EIX plugs, new lifters. The car has a LSD and oil pressure and temp gauges as standard. The front suspension top mounts are replaced with poly type which have thicker plates, and the tyres are cut slick type 215/45r17w. The car remains standard everywhere else, and only the header is visible under the bonnet if you look over the back, plus the JCW emblem on the airbox. Currently there is no cat while testing.

Next week I will have a GP intercooler I expect. I have the coilovers which I don't really want to fit, as I was considering releasing the car now, if I keep it I will fit Brembo R56 JCW brakes front and rear increasing the front to 315mm and rear to 280mm, and I would fit an ACT Streetlite flywheel and road clutch, also I would fit a proprietary oil cooler, and a couple of other bits.
