I know it can be hard diagnosing noises without hearing them but stick with me.

I have a 2007 Cooper S Clubman that has done 62k miles. Noticed a slight whine about 2 weeks ago but suspected it was my car hypochondria kicking in again. Anyway, it's got worse now and quite quickly over the last 4 days.

Whatever I do with the clutch pedal I can hear it. If I'm accelerating its at its worse and as I slow down by coming off the throttle, still in gear, I can hear it. From idle in neutral its there too, if I rev the engine.

From Google and a friend, it could be the thrust bearing but a lot of Google posts say the noise should go away if the pedal is pressed. On my car the noise is there all the time.

It's driving me up the wall! I also have a 120 mile round trip to do on Friday and I'm really not looking forward to it even with breakdown cover.

Any help/advice gratefully received.

Thanks

Had a mechanic look at it today. He thinks it's the tensioner for the aux belt so booked it in to have that done a week on Saturday. It's definitely not coming from the clutch side of the engine so that's a relief.
