Six speed on both manual and automatic:
"The auto is a six-speed torque converter found elsewhere in the Mini range, but with new software for the JCW. Namely, that means manual mode really does mean manual control – it’ll run into the limiter and keep doing so until you tell it to change up, and it won’t kick down automatically, only shifting down if it really must to avoid stalling." [Car Magazine]
I've had a look and can't find any respected site (Car, AutoTrader, Autoexpress, Goodwood) claim anything other than six-speed torque converter.
It's a good auto, smooth around town and a willing co-conspirator when pressing on. Took me a couple of months to get used to it, but I now know the box pretty well and can change gear by small modulations on the throttle. The only time I use the paddles is when slowing into a tight corner where I know I want to accelerate smartly out of it (because of an incline change I will preselect a higher gear than the box would normally select for the speed and current (zero) throttle opening).

Thanks. The reviews that mention the 8-speed are from before the JCW was released."The auto is a six-speed torque converter found elsewhere in the Mini range, but with new software for the JCW. Well found. Here's the details of the Clubman from the horse's mouth:
