I purchased an extended warranty after some deliberation as normally for this type of car I would not bother. Car in question is a 2011 Mini Cooper Convertible that my wife and daughter share. Current milage is 15000 miles. They both have access to other vehicles so its not a daily runner.

The fan for the heating/air con failed a couple of weeks ago and after investigating the usual suspects I booked the car into Eastern's in Edinburgh who I have to say from Sales to Service have been very good to deal with.

Fan motor was diagnosed to have failed and resulted in a dashboard out, to install a replacement.
A small oil leak was then discovered on the back side of the engine when the dash was removed.
This leak had traveled up the wiring loom into the ECU resulting in a new ECU being required.
End result was a bill of £1500 plus vat for parts and who knows what the labour charge would have amounted to.

Happy with the way the issue was dealt with although I have lost some confidence in the brand given our wee Punto gets tanked everywhere and the Rav 4 hauls 3 x the mileage ofter with a car and car trailer in tow.

I guess mechanical items will always go wrong and maybe I was just unlucky, would be interested to hear if anyone else has had a similar problem as the girls like the car and no doubt will want a replacement in the future.

My advice is never run a MINI without their warranty, they seem to be quite fragile and the dealer network labour rates are crazy.

Outside the TLC is different as you can use specialists without affecting the trade-in (for a new MINI) so much. And of course if you're handy with a Haynes or into the modding scene then it's another world altogether.

Good advice I think sad61t, to be honest I am handy mechanically but I did not by German to work weekends, so to speak.
I guess I will always remember to run with TLC and warranty and that will be everyone in the family happy.
