R56 Cooper S rattley start up
Discussion
Hello all,
I know everyone is thinking "Death Rattle"
Car is a 2011 R56 (so death rattle not applicable?) and occasionally gives a metallic sounding rattle on start up. that lasts for maybe 20 seconds while a reverse out the garage and then its gone. The car is booked in to have the high pressure fuel pump replaced (under warranty) after it went into limp home mode a couple of times, so i will mention it, but the car needs to be 100% cold and it doesn't do it all the time so i doubt they will notice it.
Any idea's?
The wife's Mini One can sound pretty rough on start up too, is it just a case of 'they all do that'

2011 s should be a N18 engine, which is supposed to be free of timing chain issues, but a few have been reported to have had to be replaced, oil level ok? As obviously low oil on a hydraulic tensioner will not help.
Yeah the oil level is fine, checked the other day, good thought though. As an aside, the dipstick is bloody hard to read, but it does always come out with some oil on it 5bob said:

In higher ambient temperatures (between 64° and 86°F)
As it seems to be happening even with very cold, wintery ambient temperatures.Edited by jimmy156 on Tuesday 2nd December 18:04
