I am interested to find out whether there are any "known" issues with ignition / starting on the R53 Cooper S?

I recently bought a 2005 Cooper S auto. Having run fine since purchase, it suddenly refused to start this morning, marooning us in the sticks. The battery was okay and the starter motor turned over but no fire up after several prolonged attempts. I then left the car for about an hour and when I retried it, the car eventually spluttered into life and after that appeared to run fine.

As the car was still in warranty I sent it to the garage to be checked, but the diagnostics apparently showed no problems. Not wanting it to happen again and leave me stranded for good next time, they suggested that changing the coil might fix the issue.

Can anyone offer any other suggestions please? Cheers - CY88

No-one?

Coil was changed yesterday even though garage detected no problems, and car left out outside overnight at home once returned. It was a little cold this morning with some dew. Again it refused to start, despite turning the engine over for lengthy periods, until the fifth attempt. frown

Is the battery really ok? How old is it?
You need more than a voltage check - take it to Halfords or a battery retailer who will run a proper condition check.

It may have enough power to turn it over but not enough to spark properly as well.
This winter killed batteries.

Thanks for the replies,

It definitely doesn't seem to be a battery issue as the starter motor turns over fine and all the electrics are working.

My gut feeling is that its something to do with fuel starvation and possibly related to the cold start set up. I'm going to see what happens if I wait until later in the day to start it tomorrow - once the air has warmed up, or leave it in the garage overnight. Hopefully that will help with the diagnosis in the absence of any fault codes.

I guess that leads and plugs may be worth checking next too.

Its irritating me as Ive only had the car a short time and, given its already been back to the dealer, I'm tempted argue unfit for purpose as I don't want ongoing niggliy problems like this.

I'd still get the battery checked properly.
As it's not known to you it could be quite aged.

it may be suing all it's power to turn the engine over with nothing left to spark it into life.
It certainly happened with my, admittedly small, bike batteries this winter.

It's a cheap (if not even free) and easy check and would count it in or out of the equation.

Battery is checked and is good.

Have been testing the car each morning over the last week in various conditions. Basically if it is kept inside the garage or outside with a blanket over the bonnet, it will happily start. But if it is outside and the temperanture is below 15 degrees, it will not start.

Mechanic is now going to try replacing something to do with the temperature sensor. Fingers crossed.

Having googled the topic it seems like there are a handful of reported similar cases on certain Mini forums, but unfortunately noone ever posts an ending either way to the topic frown

Short (and hopefully concluding) update.... The temperature sensor that dictates the fuel mixture on ignition was replaced earlier this week and there have been no problems since. Touch wood this has solved the problem. smile

Arrghhh... its back with a vengeance. After several weeks of problem free starting, the same infuriating problem has arisen. The weather is great and its been nice and dry too, so its clearly not a temperature or damp problem. It has a new fuel pump. The only error code that shows today was a throttle accentuator one briefly, but the car's automatic diagnositic system deleted it once it started running after half an hour of trying. I can't believe mine is the only MINI to suffer from this sort of problem??!! Help!

They are fun my rear wipper works when it wants. Sound more like an imobilser problem???? Try getting out lock the car then unlock and try starting. I know it sounds like a PC reboot but worth a try. If it works then you know were to star looking. If not at least it cost nothing. Good luck. Also try your othere key.

When it fails to start does the usual ignition on lights come on? Battery light, engine light, oil light? I've had a few faulty ignition switches with burnt contacts, that just crank over without starting when they have had a bad contact. But the usual lights don't come on when the fault occurs

I've had this a couple of times. I seem to be having electrical problems of late. Last night it would not start - starter cranks, but engine does not fire. I popped the three relays out of the fuse box, put them back in and it started fine. Those relays have been causing other problems as well - radiator fan would not turn off and ran the battery dead.
