They didn't have a Toyota engine.IceBoy
The OLD 1st Gen R50 MINI One Diesel produced from 2003 to 2006 had a Toyota sourced 1.4 diesel engine, the same as found in the Yaris (D4-D).
The new R56 MINI (Autumn 2006 onwards) had a PSA sourced diesel fitted in the CooperD up until late 2010/early 2011 (no-one knows the exact switch date) when it then switched over to BMWs own 1.6 diesel which is produced in house at Hams Hall in Birmingham - alongside the petrol prince engine.
MINI One Diesel (1st Gen R50)
The above is distinguishable as even after the facelift (note the facelifted Xenons on the car above) the OneD soldiered on with pre-facelifted bumpers up until its demise in 2006.
Here is the PSA diesel engine from the 2nd Gen R56 CooperD:
The later BMW engine had a much larger engine cover, more like the one used on the 2.0 litre models.

The switch date was September 2010 when the cars were facelifted. The latest engine is a BMW unit. The easy way to from under the bonnet is the PDA diesel had the turbo at the front. How embarrassing. I thought my 62-plate Cooper D was a PSA engine. Based on this thread, it's apparently a BMW motor.
Err yes, it will have the BMW engine. Another MINI Diesel oddity...
MINI Cooper SD Manual - 2 litre
MINI Cooper SD Auto - 2 litre
MINI Cooper D Manual - 1.6 litre
MINI Cooper D Auto - 2 litre
The Cooper D automatic runs a detuned version of the Cooper SD's 2-litre engine.
That 2-litre refers to only the Paceman and Countryman models - ALL others are 1.6
Edit: that was what I've just been told on a MiniChat online (on their site)

So very confused now!

If you spec the auto box on a Cooper D, you get the 2-litre engine, just detuned.
I've got a 2007 model. It's done 84,000 miles and I've had no issues with the engine (or anything else for that matter). Most of the driving I do in it is longish distances, at least 40 mile journeys each way commuting and many over 300 miles in a day. I've always thought that this helps with keeping it "healthy" but maybe that's just me. Oh yeah and its averaged 65mpg overall.
I have considered an SD but didn't feel it was significantly better to warrant the cost of changing. Maybe when the R56 one comes out though I could be tempted.
