Hi everyone

Last night i went to check the oil levels in my cooper s. Pull the stick out and the dip stick is broken. I am left holding the handle with about 2 inches of plastic stick on the end of it. The rest is stuck in the tube frown I m no rocket scientist but fancy making a dip stick out of plastic!!

Anyway being a girl and knowing nothing about cars i have been up all night worrying about it. Some people are telling me its a big deal the end could go into the engine etc.

To try and sort it i go to kwik fit this morning and ask if they could get the other end out for me they try unsuccessfully as the tube is too small. I then phone mini who tell me the only way to get it out is to take the sump off and this will cost me £300!!

Im very upset because in October i spent £300 getting my sump repaired as it had a slight leak and surely the dip stick would have shown signs of wear or they may have even snapped it themselves as i hadnt checked the oil since it was fixed

They also told me that it is fine leaving it in there but i wont know how much oil i have in the car. i replied that the oil light would come on if it was low and they said it wouldnt if the dip stick is broken as that is the only way it measures it and that a warning light would only come on for oil pressure?? Is this correct??

Could someone give me some advice please x

Hi sarah smile

Personally I would take it back to the garage where you got your sump done. Let them know the issue you have, and see what they can do smile They could be really helpfull...

1) check your oil more often in future. Four months when the last time was because the sump was broken is a smidge too long. About three months three weeks, to be honest.

2) Get stick like device, blob of blutack on end securely fixed, go fishing. Or a loop of fishing wire.

This is a common problem on the R53 Cooper S. Go to www.minitorque.com and some of the guys on there will have some ingenius ways of sorting it out as it's happened to a few of them.

To be fair I'd get it done properly rather then chucking random st down your dipstick tube. The last thing you wana do is loose foreign objects in the bottom of your engine :P

Very nearly happened to me but managed to salvage it with pliers as it snapped quite high up. New ones are cheap from BMW, or there are upgraded aftermarket ones to prevent it happening again - crap design!

Just buy a new dipstick before they break, is the best cure , as a known failure. The dipstick cracks along the shaft, so thats a pre warning of failure. Our new one was about £10 or £12 from BMW if I remember. Is there any way of removing the outer tube from the block ? It will probably be stuck in the tube, as it kinks and twsists into the sump.............

thanks everyone for your help i have contacted mini on fb and they are looking into it for me at the moment. i know its bad but because i had an oil service a few months ago with mini i have never checked my oil :/ my dad usually does this for me and he has been ill so i never knew my stick may be worn out. i think mini may have broken this when they put it back after the oil service but i cannot prove this.

surely there is a filter or mesh at the bottom of the tube to stop it falling into the engine and the only issue you have is trying to retrieve the existing dipstick?

I don't believe MINI's have an oil level light, they have a low pressure warning but I don't think they have ever had a level light.

yeah the dipstick cant get into the engine mini have since told me this. but they are saying that the only way for them to remove it is to take the sump off as the pipe is too small to be able to grab it out from. Two people at different dealers have told me 2 things about the oil light - one said it has a sensor for oil levels as well as pressure and the other said you only have the pressure light - all very confusing. i dont think they know themselves??

I work at a dealership and have been told they have never had level warnings, only a pressure warning.
