1977 Rolls-Royce Silver Shadow II - Advice on buying?
Discussion
Came across this one in my town for sale..
At €3K it seems like good value. Body looks good.
And classic tax and insurance.
What are these like to maintain? It says it needs some repairs..i did'nt call to ask the seller yet so I don't know what is wrong with it.
Are these a money pit? Do they require massive maintenance? Servicing expensive?
I know nothing about them. A very impulsive buy.
I am just thinking for €3K, classic insurance and classic tax and no depreciation and i would only drive it maybe 10-20 miles per week...it would be great to own one.

Parts arent cheap and bodywork is time consuming to repair properly with many being bodged up by cheapskate dodgy "specialists" with fresh paint and filler to hide a multitude of sins
If your a decent mechanic good at bodywork restoration and have plenty of time on your hands, then it may not be massively ruinous, merely bloody costly whenever you need to use replacement parts, something you may well have to do frequently on a car thats 33 years old. . . . . although some parts are vastly cheaper when not in the little brown boxes with double RR's all over them from Crewe
Dont get me wrong, I like shadows, a good one is a lovely thing to trundle about in and I have fond memories of the ones my family had in the 70's & 80's including being taught to drive in one, when I was 11!, but they were a very expensive car when new and running / restoration costs are comensurate with that

Have I missed something - OP says 'have come across this one' - which one? Is there supposed to be a link with more info. On the face of it judgements seem to be being made simply on he asking price, and based on the fact that repairs needed. What repairs?
Without disagreeing with the comments that they are expensive to run/maintain properly, is there really enough info. here to allow an informed decision??
Would it change things if the repairs needed were to a 'defective brake light' and the owner just wanted shot of it because the ashtray was full. Unlikely I know, but.....
