Looking for some advice on servicing:

1. The big Hydraulic service - one view I've heard from an Indy is that they tend to repair the hydraulics when required rather than undertake the service. Anyone got any thoughts on this approach? Tempted by not spending circa £3k, but not if it is a short sighted move.

2. I'm told my steering rack is leaking in 3 places and that replacement is the way to go. What's a reasonable sum to have this carried out?

3. Any feedback or comments on The Chelsea Workshop in London? Their labour rate seems pretty good given their location, but don't know what kind of reputation they have.

If I were in London, I would be taking my car to Phantom Motors at Crondall. Many of us in this forum plug them. I take my 1990 Turbo R to them, from Derby. I wouldn't go anywhere else. In fact, I would gladly sell my house and all its contents to help Phantom Motors.

I may be exaggerating with the last bit.

The approach you suggest to the hydraulics (fixing as required) appears to be the norm.

You may also want to consider Nigel Sandell in Isleworth - www.nsandell.com. He looks after James May's Corniche wink

Thanks both for comments and suggestions. Have heard good things about Phantom - just getting it there that is a bit of a pain - Isleworth nearer, and if it is good enough for James May...

The advice on the hydraulics service is difficult - many postings warn you to steer clear of cars that haven't had the hydraulics service, yet mechanics are effectively saying it isn't worth doing - very torn!

I know this has been visited a lot, but am also struggling with tyres for the 17 inch alloys - 255/55 - Avon Turbo Speeds at £350-£400 per corner seem to be the only option - anyone have any other sources/alternatives?

If you frop down a size to 245's it opens up more sensibly priced options

Ive always bit the bullet and had the hydraulic service done when needed.If you are in the situation where the brakes fail(unlikely but still possible)then the brake pedal just drops to the floor and you have a 2 and a half tonne weight to stop somehow!Dont go thinking that the handbrake could do it either,it may hold the car at a standstill,but pulling it on when the car is moving would never bring the car to a halt at any decent speed.

Another vote for Nigel Sandell from me too. Nice bloke.
I think Balmoral Green has posted a fair bit in tyre / wheel sizes, so do a search on it.
