Hi,

I have a problem with the dash laminate on my Rolls Royce Silver Spirit, it has started to break-up with age, all the woodwork is excellent apart from the laminate on the front of the glove box. does anyone know how to do the repair, and the type of varish that is required' as there is considerable thickness to the laminate.

Thank-you all,

Google 'dashboard veneering' or 'classic car veneers' or similar and you will find plenty of links to company's that will re-finish it for you, or advice on DIY in several car forums. Re-veneering companies also advertise in the Classic car magazines, or a local French polisher could also do it too.

Bentley at Crewe might actually have a set of your cars veneers kept in a controlled environment storeroom, if it is beyond saving.

The glove box lid is very easy to remove if you want to attempt a bit of DIY. Strip the varnish with paint/varnish stripper, or flat it down with glass-paper, but that might take ages. As for what to refinish it with? a light varnish applied with an expensive fine brush, flatted between coats. No idea what brand of varnish/brush to use.

Many years ago I refinished the rear vanity units in my MKVI on a DIY basis, they turned out OK. I guess it depends on the level of finish you are expecting? I recently saw a Turbo R that had the door cappings refinished, it looked like an eight year old had done it with a yard brush and a tin of treacle biggrin

If it all goes a bit wonky with the DIY, this lot will sort you out, very good work.

Another recommendation is http://www.chapmanandcliff.co.uk/

Both are ex Rolls/Bentley woodshop and from my experience offer a level of service and care long forgotten in most trades!

Hi,
This is a message for gary71. just to say a big thank-you as i sent my glove box front away to Chapman & Cliff the rolls royce coachwork builders, and they have made a first class job referb. well done for your reconmending them.

One further matter that you or a fellow member may be able to help with. I am finding that when i start the car from cold, the choke is failing to return back to the normal idle seating position even after a few miles, hence i have a 6.75 engine running like a train, it has been surgested to me it may be the barometric spring. can you help.

Thanks,
cobboldpac

Glad they did a good job for you! Chances are those guys veneered it first time around as well!

On your engine problem I'm afraid my knowledge of that era of Bentley stops at the wood! smile

Having said that a 'barometric spring' certainly sounds like the place to start looking. Can you return the car to a normal idle manually from under the bonnet?
