A couple of interesting barn finds up for auction in a couple of weeks. I wonder what the story is behind them?

I wonder what would be involved in recommissioning that? Full hydraulics overhaul, all bushes, discs and pads, new tyres, would there be any damage to the engine/gearbox? Would the leather be dry and likely to crack if sat on without a few weeks of feeding? And what about any rot? I know it's been inside, but they like to rot.

I would like to have a close look at that car, just to see what it's like. It is effectively new I suppose, I wonder if it would prove to be a bargain though?

I can imagine that re-commissioning would not be a task for the faint hearted (or those without deep pockets!). That said, how many other opportunties will there ever be to buy a car like that? And the number plate must be worth a few quid as well!

Some more pics to whet your appetite BG!

Turbo R

Continental R

There MUST be a really interesting story behind all this. The same owner has a load of other interesting stuff in the barn as well. Maseratis, De Tomasos.... Have a look here!

The auction company claims on its website that the Continental R is a Mulliner, it isn't. It's a standard model, doesn't give much confidence to me.

A very interesting collection of cars. A couple of DeTomasos and a couple of Low mileage Maseratis. Would love to know the background story, and why they are being sold via this aucitoneer and not a 'traditional' auto auctioneer.

The cars are being sold off as part of a wider (deceased) estate sale, I believe, which would explain why they're not being auctioned off via a specialist auctioneer. That would also explain why the description of the Continental, for example, might not be entirely accurate.

No such thing as a "BENTLEY MULSANNE TURBO R" either. The executors deserve to be sued for negligence in disposing of these cars through an auctioneer who knows nothing about them and without making any effort to establish their condition.

Here's a newspaper report on the story behind all this. I love this quote:

“He certainly wasn’t like normal collectors who acquire vehicles and wanted to hang on to them for ever, he just drove them for a bit and then put them in the barn and got something else to try. It was bit like a child opening presents on Christmas morning and getting bored with them very quickly.”

£39,000 for the Turbo R eek

http://data.bidmaster.co.uk/lsk/BidCat/Catalogues....

I assume quite a bit of this must have been justified by the value of the personalised plate?

Interceptor looked great and went for a reasonable price, considering the history and mileage.

Wonder what its going to take to get them back out on the road......................or even they'll be used again, given the low mileage (perfect museum fodder)

The Turbo R at £39k was in my view to say the least a good price. Of course, the personal plate would have had a significant value, but even allowing for this factor the price was still high. I am no expert when it comes to what is involved in the re commissioning of one of these vehicles, but it cannot be a cheap exercise. I know just keeping up my own well maintained example to an acceptable level is no cheap affair. In fact I always feel that there is something that needs doing, and as you deal with one project the next looms. With a car that has stood and done nothing for so long it would be interesting to know the extent of what needs attention. Chris

£39K for the Turbo R is madness.

I think the number plate is worth circa £7K, but the R could need £1000's spending on it before it is roadworthy (if it ever is going back on the road)

What might the Turbo R retail for?

A couple of years ago I saw a 'new' Silver Shadow up at £40,000. My guess is the Turbo R might be similarly priced, but I also reckon it will take about £10,000 to get it up to scratch too. Full service, full hydraulics overhaul, every bush & washer will need to be changed, new discs & pads & tyres etc.

So probably not a commercial buyer, a private punter who wants a 'new' Turbo R?

I "thought" the car might just do £50K somewhere, but as you say it will need £10K or so to recomission it, there are usually a few sub 20K milers around which can be bought for sub £30K retail, surely a more sensible buy?
