I'm seriously considering a Continental GT as a second car. I got an 06 model offered with 50k miles at a very attractice price. Are there any issues with GTs beyond what you'd anyway expect of a car with higher milage?

Thanks for your advice

My gt has now covered 55000 miles and is as strong as ever.make sure you buy one with proper service history. You may be able to buy an extended warranty from a main agent for about £1600.probably a good idea. Harry Diamond.

Thanks for your comments. I'd definitively put the car on warranty. Resale issues given it's already high milage are my biggest concern with this deal. Let's see

Decision has been taken and I'll pick up my new toy tomorrow.

It's an all-black (outside and inside) GT with Mulliner package. I changed from the original Mulliner 20" wheels (which look a bit too "pimp my ride" for my taste) to other Bentley 19" of similar but more subtle style.

Thanks for the help. Dr S

My 06 has some rust and has just had coil packs. Eleccy glitches seem to be the norm for me.

Dr s,just wondered how you have got on with your purchase??

was thinking of buying a similar spec car to what you have mentioned and was wondering if you got a pre purchase inspection carried out.

stain, is that correct about rust on your 06 model, that does tend to worry me slighty.
what sort of electrical problems have you encountered ??

the prices of the GT's seem to have firmed up, since the drop around end of 2008, like most cars i suppose, just cant see how you still get dealers asking £42K + for a GT with over 78k miles. would have thought with that mileage it would have to be bit under £40k to sell.
Seen one on AT this week that seems good value for 2005 model at £48k with 38k miles.

Mike,

My car has some rust on the leading edge of the rear door where the front door has slowly been chipping the paint off, so not as worrying as a mercedes for example, which just seem to rot for the sake of it. There is also corrosion on all of the chrome door trims where they meet the gloss black trims. I suspect this is dissimilar metal corrosion and something BMWs suffer from a lot too.

The PDC needs a factory approved mod to stop it going off for no reason, the stereo gets stuck on mute from time to time, the Sat Nav sometimes loses the car symbol on the map, and once I had a data bus cable malfunction message on the screen - whatever the heck that is!

The gearbox is playing up a bit when cold now too. It appears to slip in 1st gear and as the revs flare, it bangs into motion with such force it hurts your neck. They have reloaded the software but it still does it. I think I'll renew the warranty for another year ....

thx for the reply stain,

does seem a few niggles for an 06 model, makes me think when i am looking at 04 money what i might be getting into. dont mind paying for routine service and repair work here and there but wouldnt want huge bills every month or so. so from your experiance they can be a potential money pit? understand its a Bentley and that it goes with the type of car it is to expect costly bills, but is it any more than running a 2005 911 997???

Can't answer that really as our 911 did so few miles it never went wrong. Routine servicing on the Bentley is not too bad though.

Conveniently there's a Conti GT buying guide in Performance Car this month. The potential bills make eye-watering reading for the W12..!

thx for reply ppl,

understand what you mean black966,
what year did you end up getting??
its just i am at that point where a 40k one is just in my budget for next year, and was thinking come march next year they will be even more at 40-45k to choose from, does seem on what month you look on AT and PH there either seem to be loads at 40k ish or one in a horrible colour combo.

well its either take the plunge and keep my fingers crossed for a conti GT and hope i dont get any eye watering bills or play it safe and go for a 2005/2006 911, and even then thats not a guarantee its not goin to have any costly bills in the future.

think best bet if i do go for 2004 model is to stick to an indy dealer who sold some previous and to defiently get a pre purchase inspection carried out.

what sort of service cost are expected, £1000 ish ??? or is that an indy specialist money ???

thx funk, ill get a copy tomorrow smile

I bought a late 05 mulliner. Teething problems were minor. Boot kept unlocking, exhaust bypass valve stuck, parking sensor faulty and windows needed reset. 1st/3rd/5th service approx £850, 2nd £1000, 4th £1700 & 6th £1300 all in multiples of 10k or a year. Brilliant car should have got one earlier. Article in PC was not all that bad by the way, especially if you read it twice! Will keep it till next year then buy a GTC.

thx for replys,

service costs aren't that bad considering thats its a Bentley!

Ive read the article and it hasn't put me off at all, i think its the same as any expensive car maker, its not going to be cheap to service and repair them if anything goes wrong. I Had a Range Rover Vogue in 2007 for over 18 months and i must have spent £2-3k keeping that going threw all its turbo/EGR problems. Had to sell as it was in the garage more than on the road and it wasnt even that old at the time (2003 model)
That really annoyed the hell out me having that, as it was such a nice motor and that amazing interior similar to the Bentley standards.
Just hope when i do eventually go for one next year, that i can get decent example for £40k and i dont end up with a lemon frown
The prices just seem so strong from last year, i am sure i seen a high miler on AT for £35k around Oct/Nov time.
They dont seem to dropping like a few ppl thought (me included)
Was hoping the high mile examples would have been around £35k area by end of this year/early next year, but doesnt seem to happening.
But on the flip side the 2004 £40-45k ones dont seem to be deprecating much at all.

Hi there, Regarding the prices not dropping as much as we'd like. I was looking for a flying spur since about february and the prices never seemed to come down hardly, I thought there would be loads under the £50k mark by now but only high milers seem to be that low.
I just bought a spur and when I did my 1st hpi check on the 28-8-09 the car was valued (hpi's valuation) £2800 lower than when I updated it yesterday. I didn't change any information either. Have prices gone up this month in the guides?

Mike,

sorry for the late reply.

Got my new baby about a month ago and am very happy. I only use it on weekends for longer trips. Already did a 500 mile roundtrip the other weekend.

Bought the car from a dealer with warranty, covering about anything on the car. I plan to put in on Bentley's used car warranty once it's out of its current warranty.

It's a great and effortless drive. Of course, it's more at home on German Autobahn (surfving on waves of torque and power wink) than your typical B road. However, it amazes me how the car comes alive when pressing on. The only downside IMHO is the steering which is too indirect and lacks feel.

Go for it! thumbup

what was the problem with the parking sensor as I seem to have a similar problem? Was it a big job as I am told its not covered by the Level 2 Bentley warranty?

MY 04/54 conti gt has now done 57000 miles.i have owned it from 35000 miles, nearly 2 years and have had minimum aggro.service history is very important. i have no rust and the best all round tyres are pirelli p zero. over 20k miles on these. these cars are not dropping around the £40k mark as they are fantastic value.try to buy classic colours with a sensible interior.avoid bright red and light wood for better resale. Harry.

A warranty is prudent for sure, but they are good cars smile Post 07MY the car evolved significantly with a lowered driving position, new glovebox and a host of minor upgrades. Find one that has been looked after and you won't go too far wrong.

A great car and one that grows on you the further and longer you drive it.

I love them, and not just because I live in Crewe smile

To me it actually was a big plus that there is quite a bit of VW in this car as it makes a hassle free ownership experience much more likely.

I also have the P Zeros on mine. Harry, do you use Winter tyres at all and which would you recommend?
