Hello everyone, I was wondering if anyone on here could point me in the right direction on repairing it myself. The car is a Bentley Turbo R 1991,it has been running fine until today.I went for a short trip to the shops without any bother,on my return the car fired up on about five cylinders and the check engine light came on.The car now over fuels putting thick black smoke out of the exhaust and smells really rich. The rev counter needle judders as if its electrical. Any help will be greatly appreciated.

It could be that the rubber drive belt on the tandem distributor has snapped, there are two distributors and the second one is driven off the first by a tiny toothed belt.

It happened on mine about a year ago, and it only ran on four cylinders.

They are supposed to be changed on one of the service schedules, I would advise anyone with one of these cars that has done around 60-100K to check if it has been replaced.

If this is the fault, don't do too many miles with it like this, although the car might run & drive, there will be neat fuel washing down the bores causing wear and also diluting the engine oil.

Thanks for the reply, I have now dropped it off at Bentley Hampshire for them to diagnose.I was thinking it may be that drive belt as I took it down there. They can plug it in to their scanner and save a lot of time. I am trying to sort out the rest of my fleet as I am going to sell a few of my collection this year.12 cars has become somewhat of a logistical nightmare!

If you lift off the distributor caps, the rotor arm will not move on the 1st, but will spin freely on the 2nd.

If that is what it is, it's not a big job, the parts cost is peanuts, maybe an hour or two's labour. If you drove it down there, get the oil changed as a precaution.

Good luck with it.
