Has anyone got a pre-1970's Rolls or Bentley?
Discussion
BalmoralGreen recommended a Bentley R Type, and it seems it's possible to pick up a good'un for about £15k. Apparently these are a good entry into something more vintage.
I'm particularly taken with something of this ilk:
£16,500 here >Dribble<
I've heard they can crack the ton, but is this advisable?
I'd look at keeping the car with a local mechanic during the week for fettling (trusted 110% - He rebuilt a beautiful Aston V8 to concours finish and has been a family friend for 30 years), then take it home at weekends where it would live outside Friday night until Monday morning, when it would be tucked up again for a little tune here, a little polish there etc.
Might even use it for the odd wedding
Couple of questions...
1). Will these still have the 'town and country' AROOOOOOOGGGGAAA horns?
2). Is this top money for this model?
3). Could I get anything sexier for the money (I doubt it, but I'm open to suggestions if anyone has a Silver Ghost lying about)
4). What are they like to drive in everyday conditions? ie: will it be battleship slow, or will it keep up with traffic without a strain? etc...
Looking forward to some replies. I've long wanted a Vintage car, and this seems to offer vintage looks for modern money, with classic reliability. Sounds about perfect.
Having said that... I've just spotted this on the same site for £17,500
I think a Bentley suits my rogue-ish image better though

How does this grab you?
SCIII Flying Spur. Not mine but belongs to a very good mate who lets me out in her now and again.
She draws more attention that his Aston and my Cerb put together
Not quite in your suggested price range though

Beautiful colour He must be very proud.
It's going to attract sooooo much totty. Days at the races with champagne and strawbs will be the order of the day

The car which immediately springs to mind to also consider is the Alvis TA21 and TC21 Saloons. A ton is achievable in a TC21.
This beauty is up for sale for £12,750 from an Alvis specialist. The coachwork is by H.J. Mulliner who also did the Bentley coachwork.
There's also a case for the Armstrong-Siddely Sapphire. Not sure if they will do the ton but they are of the same pleasing school. This beauty is up for sale for £12,750 from an Alvis specialist. The coachwork is by H.J. Mulliner who also did the Bentley coachwork.
Getting some old school 'I'm rich and well bred so get out of the ing way' horns would be a huge bonus on anything...

My 1949 MKVI used to spend hours in lane 3 at the ton, along with all the TDI's and BMW's. I drove it hard for six years. Loved it, great cars. And - no-one seems to have answered this yet, and as an owner you should know - do you get a cool 'Poop, Poop, Arooooga' Horn?
In case you hadn't worked this out, that's the most important bit

Did the car lap it up, or did it struggle?
Another gear, or a higher axle ratio would have been nice. But no struggle. TBF though, my car did have an engine rebuild in '96 so all my hard driving was done on a engine known to be good.
Any good buyers guides anywhere on the net?

What about a Facel Vega? I know its a Rolls forum but I have to spread the Facel Vega gospel. One sold recently for low money. Almost within budget!!!
I saw a Facel Vega HK500 once in the flesh. It was perfect. It gave me a little tent in my shorts Yep, don't mind at all. Please supply documentary evidence to back up your claim of a FV for under £20k though, seeing as anything less would be a blatant thread hijack
Edit: Bugger me, I've found two of the buggers for less than £21k within 5 minutes of looking. Serious question - why don't more people drive stuff like this?
