RR/Bentley. 6.7 V8 or 6.7 V12.

I think the engines used by Rolls Royce and Bentley in recent times are:
4.4 BMW V8
6.75 Rolls Bentley V8
6.75 Rolls Bentley V8 Turbo
6.75 BMW V12
Also the 6 litre W12 VW engine. Which would be my pick, and the turboed RR V8s pack enormous punch too. They'd be second. Not that I've driven either, mind!4.4 BMW V8
6.75 Rolls Bentley V8
6.75 Rolls Bentley V8 Turbo
6.75 BMW V12
Its got to be the big crewe V8. Lovely old engine and designed for the car in the first place. The BMW V8 or W12 nonsense are just examples of a stock engine being shoe-horned in by the then owners. The 6.75 V8 is the real deal.
Even Bentley now recognise this, because the current Arnage and Brooklands contains a refined and updated version of the classic V8 motor rather than a cut and paste job from a VW.

Surely the only ones to have are the middle two..no brainers really.4.4 BMW V8

My Dad has the 6.75 Bentley V8 in his, its never missed a beat in 4 years.
I was fortunate enough to have spent a day with a Rolls Royce Seraph, which had the BMW V12 engine. That was superb, I preferred it to the old warhorse Crewe V8 actually. As for the BMW V8 that was fitted to the early Arnage, bloody awfull thing. Smooth yes, technically advanced yes, but bloody awfull nonetheless. When they put the old engine into the new car, they got it right at last.

Wasn't that engine the one with quite a modest output, around 300 bhp from 5 and a half litres?I am thinking that the best engine of all is probably the latest Phantom 6.75 V12, non?

Probably. I think it's the latest incarnation of what was the Seraph engine, and the BMW 760 engine isn't it?Although the original 1936 Phantom III 7.2 V12 was quite something.
(especially with an Austin Seven engine mounted on the running board to power the supercharger as some absolute nutter had back in the day).

Either way, driving along the busy Boulevard St Michel and out to the suburbs was amazing in the Phantom.

I can only comment on the 6.7 V8, but I do love it.
Smooth, "woofly", warbling, but still with that unmistakeable V8 undercurrent; everyone who has heard it on startup always goes, "Phwoarrrr! Nice!".
Looks nice as well:

Still miss the old mans T-Series, much waftier than the replacement...
I always remember with great affection the sound of Bader gently swelling up from the bulkhead in a mid 90s Brooklands number.
A V8 6.75, of course, spiced only with a light pressure turbo (aka LPT in the txt of ads,) it is estimated to have made a measly 300bhp but combined with the compliance of the springy bits, made for fabulous progress.
Not at all fast but irresistably imperious.
