I think I may have one of these, but i'm not sure. I've had it for ten years, it is new and still taped up in RR tape. I was told it was for a Shadow/T type.

Would you recognise it if you saw it? Will take some pics this weekend and post them up.

OK Rod,

This is what i've got, I have no idea what it is.

It would appear to be a pair of rear silencers and pipes, a left hand and a right hand.

They are marked as...

UR19240 38/97
UR19241 27/97

This may be a stupid question but as its exhaust related I thought I'd ask: how much noise should a shadow make? When inside mines very quiet but I noticed that when outside and the engines running the engine/ exhaust is surprisingly loud. Is this right? Or should everything be silent?

The most noise you should get from the engine is the roar of the fan and various drive belts. There shouldn't be much mechanical noise, other than the rattly tappets on start up for an older leggy Shadow, which soon subside anyway if it's in fine fettle. I have just the one sticky tappet, at 17 years old and 93K, but it only rears its 'tap tap' very occassionally and it goes away after a minute or so anyway. Exhaust shouldn't make much noise either. My car is very stealthy, at least, it should be, but my exhaust manifold gaskets are on the way out.

Mines 27 (1980) and has 90K on the clock so it should be okay. I think the exhaust must be blowing at some point just below the front of the cabin. Would that be why I'm only getting about 5 MPG?

She's drinking a lot of oil and water as well - is that a bad sign?

A blowing exhaust shouldnt really be affecting MPG to that degree.

As for using oil & water, if its simply leaking it, no problem. They do use oil anyway, but not excessively so.

Presumably there isn't any mayo' in the oil or header tank?

The oil seems okay. I'm going through about 4ltr in say 500 miles and I top the water up about once a month.

I generally only use the car around town so its probably not the most economical driving.

I really should sort out a service as it also seems to be lurching between 1st and 2nd gears when its cold.

Shame you're up in Aberdeen Lee, or i'd have a run over and see you.

Sounds like the old girl needs a good service, and a few good runs.
