I posted a topic about running a Turbo R below and a friend of mine kindly lent me his 98 Turbo RT for the weekend to see how I got on with it. The interior and engine are a delight but the car, whilst it handles well on super smooth roads is so crashy over bumps when compared to my 2004 S class merc. Even driven slowly it is so crashy that it promotes complaints from my 3 year old.
Is this normal ?

Depends on what wheel & tyre size combo its running. A '98 car being the last of the line is probably on 17" or 18" wheels with fairly low profile tyres.

My 1990 Turbo R was running originally on 15" wheels with big squishy Avon turbospeeds, they were like big donuts really on the very small wheels, it had that magic carpet ride and was very wafty indeed. But when you wanted to turn, you had to wait an age for the slop in the sidewalls to be taken in, and it rolled and lurched a lot too. Then I bought some five spoke chunky 18" wheels secondhand from a Continental T. Whilst the turn in, grip and general handling has improved, I killed the ride of the car and it does crash about a bit now.

Very recently I put the originals back on temporarily whilst I had the others refurbed, the return of supreme waftability was rather nice, albeit shortlived. I do like the looks of the car on 18's, as well as the crisper response.

My RT was very crashy... until I had the suspension sorted. The rear green spheres were dead. After fettling by the lads at Phantom Motors, the ride is superb -- no crashing at low speeds at all

I would suggest getting the car checked over. BTW, Phantom wouldnt let me drive the car home till they had fixed it, saying it wasnt safe to drive.

Try driving along a motorway at about 70. Get someone inside the car to look sideways - is the car pitching up and down at the back, appearing to rotate around the front wheels? If so, its definitely gone at the back

Goodness, are Bentleys really that sensitive to tyre choice?
