First drop-top Roller auctioned

Most expensive new car ever sold?

none
none

The first Rolls-Royce Phantom Drophead Coupé has been auctioned for $2 million.

The charity auction was held during the annual Naples Winter Wine festival in Florida for $2 million. More than $1.6 million will go to the Naples Children and Education Foundation (that's Naples, Florida, USA), which supports charitable and educational programmes to improve the physical, emotional and educational lives of underprivileged or at-risk children.

The winning bid is the single highest price paid for any lot in the event’s seven-year history and, said Rolls, makes this Phantom Drophead Coupé the most expensive new car ever sold in the USA.

The winner, a resident of Naples, will take delivery of the car later this year.

The auction took place on 27 January and was staged at the Ritz-Carlton Golf Resort in Naples. It was attended by many of the world’s finest vintners, chefs, television and film personalities, as well as wine lovers and culinary enthusiasts from all over the USA. Naples’ families who share a passion for great wine, excellent food, and supporting their community established the Festival in 2000.

Rolls-Royce launched the new Phantom Drophead Coupé at the Detroit Motor Show earlier in January 2007. The hand-made, two-door, four-seat convertible combines lightweight aluminium technology, elegant design and hand-crafted materials. The result is a car that many have described as the ultimate in open top motoring. An extensive order bank already exists, with all of the 2007 cars allocated. Full production starts in the summer.

Going to be piss in the ocean for whoever bought it mind, plus 1.6 mil is going to charity so they probably bought it for a nice bit of PR.

Personally I would have Riva Aquamarina, a Bentley Azure, deck the patio, dvd box set of thunderbirds and donate the rest to charity rather than buying that fugly thing.

Nope, I really like the car and I don't think you'd moan if someone handed you the keys in all honesty ...you know its going to be a bloody comfortable drive and I doubt theres much out there with more presence than this.

I'm not the only one who likes on here, I remember the article when it was launched, come on people back me up....

I like it, particularly that wood decking. It's fit for purpose. Metal and plastic are sooo nouveau riche...

Yes, it would match ones megayacht, parked up on the quayside with 'Tender to Disco Volante' or similar written on the bootlid.
