Bentley starts building droptop

Continental GTCs trickle out this month

Bentley Continental GTC
Bentley Continental GTC
Bentley Motors has announced that it's started production of the Continental GTC -- an unprecedented -- for Bentley -- introduction of two convertibles in a single year.

The GTC is the third member of Bentley's Continental family, and joins the Continental GT coup. and Continental Flying Spur four-door; in common with its siblings, the GTC will come from the state of the art production facilities in Crewe, Cheshire.

Customer deliveries of the GTC, which start in the UK this month, mark the end of the launch phase for the Continental family. This phase required the support of a number of temporary production associates to provide manning flexibility, and these contracts will end in December 2006.

Bentley's also confirmed that, from the end of the year, all Bentleys will again be manufactured in Crewe.  To satisfy demand during the launch phase, the final assembly of a small proportion of Continental Flying Spurs has been undertaken at the parent Volkswagen's factory in Dresden, Germany. This will come to an end as planned in December 2006.

I like it, in a lot of ways it looks just as well as the tin top, if not better. Have to say though, most of them will be brightly coloured, with chrome wheels and have very light garish interiors, which when the interior will be on show most of the time, is a bit much. I have seen a few of these, and thought the same thing 'nice car, shame about the tacky colours'. Darker paintwork, and a deep ox-blood leather interior would be nice, and might even be close to understated, somehow, I doubt I will see one.

I'd rather have this one than the DB 9 Volante...

the DB 9 is great as coupe IMHO...

I've seen several on the roads around South Cheshire, and they seem quite acceptable in the flesh.

I have to admit I've never been a huge fan of the tin top Conti, just looked a bit odd at the back for me, like a coupe rear end grafted onto a limo front end. But I really like the convertible, works so much better, just dont put the roof up.

Derek Bell drives a Conti, and sings it's 200mph+ praises to anyone who'll listen. Works for me....

I saw one on the M1 - the drop top suits it quite well. I agree about the Footballers' wives image though.

As a consequence I calculate that I will be selling my Continental GT at the end of 2007 or the start of 2008. Interested PH'ers should start applying for my car now and I will compile a short list based upon how much someone is willing to pay and whether my car will go to a good home.

Think the footballers wives image is pure bullpoo myself
Do you know many footballers wives who actually drive these cars?
But if they do have the money should they not?
Would your wife drive one if she was able?

I personally think the car looks good and wish I could afford for my wife to drive one. Think there are a lot of sour grapes and mis informed people round here at the moment.

I wonder if the people at bentley are walking round upset that young people with the wealth are actually falling over themsleves to buy a fantastic product, or if they wish that the Henley tie club (no offence to henley dudes, still have house down there) who are too old and fat (ok little offence) to even fit in the sports seats properly were clamering for the car in there dozens.

Its not difficult Sarbs, you can buy a GTC, or an Azure. There is a choice. I personally dont have a problem with any judgement others will make based upon that choice. I guess its like the old Arnage or Spur debate?

For me, the argument comes down to something as simple as the substrate for the veneers. And that is something that many just wont understand, yet it speaks volumes, as the same principle runs through many aspects of the two types of product currently on offer. Thankfully though, for now, there is a choice, and I fully accept that its due to the one that I wouldnt choose being the bread & butter of the marques very survival.
