Gents,

If you dial up www.autotrader.co.uk and search within the Bentley section, you'll happen upon several '97 reg RTs with scarcely run in mileages (28-56k, for instance) being offered in exchange for wodges of folding that seem to defy the laws of common decency.

We are talking £33-£35 large!

Now, forgive me but am I not right in thinking that this is nothing short of automotive criminality in action?

I still remember the old barge as the definitive olde worlde carriage with an hilarious fleetness which whilst not quite class leading these days, would still entertain those of you who ponder maps of the former empire.

As a place to loiter, period, it remains almost unmatched, that vast prow and thrumming underbonnet Hurricane a symphony of now defunct but glorious defiance in the face of our nation's terminality.

You know, like my old Cerbera I've never really recovered from being without and as Ballers will no doubt testify, aside from Fez or Bull ownership, few motors illicit such a warm glow ito the sheer ownership experience itself, as projected by one of these behemoths.

Everything about these monsters is irrepressably classy; the RT and it's even more exclusive Mulliner derivatives, possessed subtle styling makeovers which set them apart from the potentially passe earlier cars and although getting no younger, I feel these cues (the mesh grille, say) imbue it with an effortless chunck of timelessness which is credible for any who hold truck with the desire to shoot vermin on sight, both barrels.

I urge anyone with the slighest wherewithall to stop pontificating and do the correct thing, I doubt we will witness it's like again.

Joy.

Go on then, when are you getting yours?

DAZ

(didn't realise the Continentals could be had for late £30s.)

Sire,

The Contis are great but don't quite hit the mark, for me: the centre consoles, even in the later, swb 'T' hotrods, were lifted straight from the early - mid 90s Turbo Rs whereas the RT cockpit was much revised.

As you know, I have little if any of the requisite wherewithall, such is the regime of Chairman Bliar but for geezers of your mighty eminence, there is no excuse not to have something green prowling the west country, collecting yon tenants' rent.

{Completely off thread - it seems new M5s have finally started their descent...}

Be afraid, be very afraid, for here be absolute shitters.

Talk to the boys at Phantom before even considering it.

Which reminds me, I need to send them some folding.
