I'm in the market for a Bentley. The question is what should I go for. My budget is £85k ish. I really like the Continental GT, and I like the Arnage and I lust after an Azure. My budget means that I could buy any of these in the second hand market but obviously the Arnage and particularly the Azure would have to be "mature" vehicles. My usage would be about 10 - 12,000 miles per annum made up of long leisurely cruises down to and around southern Spain.
What would you go for?
If you have any experience of these beautiful cars (positive & negative) please respond.
Your undecided flash.

What type of Arnage? I beleive you could get an elder 'T' for that kind of money, or am I just being silly? I have been told by one owner that they do depreciate like a stone, but I suppose in your price range it would have tailed off a touch.
A Continental GT would be nice but I don't think of it as a 'proper' Bentley.
How about a Continental SC? See Octane magazine as there is often one advertised in the back of it...they do look sensational!
Hope this helps.

Am I allowed to advertise on here Ted?
Can I recommend that you go to see Simon and Stuart at Phantom Motor Cars, they specialise in just this area, but are not a main franchised dealer. I can say hand on heart that they are as good as, if not better than, any proper dealer, and the place has a really nice grittiness to it, not posh at all.
As far as giving you advice and finding a car for you, they will be ace, and on the technical side they really know their stuff. They always have late cars in stock, and can source pretty much anything. I have used them for four years, they are VERY highly regarded. At the moment they are giving BG a makeover.

I think I'm leaning more towards the Continental GT. Although the Arnage is a beautiful motor I'm not sure I could use it everyday. I saw a beautiful 01 Arnage this afternoon at approximately £79K. However, compared to a Continental GT the technology is already "old" IMHO. I think that the Continetal GT is a more usable "everyday" car unless you can persuade me otherwise!

Arnage = Single Malt
Continental = Blended
Precisely! I'm sipping a 15 year old malt as I write this but tomorrow night up to and including Thursday it'll be The Famous Grouse. A decent blend made in a high tech still and blended using the latest technology for everyday enjoyment.

Please note my "handle" "flash git in denial". Do you really want someone like me in an Arnage?
well you certainly wouldn't be in denial if you actually went ahead and bought an arnage!
I like the continentals but I really think that the arnage is the ultimate incarnation (see what I did there? ) of the motor car
Squire,
The VW is undoubtedly the better car but then again, you could ditch all pretence, don the gold chainery and bling yourself silly at this level with a biturbocharged or s/charged AMG Merc.
Which of course is out of the question, thus, the meander back to the 6.75 menu is unavoidable.
The Continentals look magnificent but are basically too compromised...in the face of later Arnages.
You really must look at the Arnage R: twin turbos and a perfectly adequate vat of warming lard in the oven, it suffers less of the crashing displayed by the T variant and defines the point perfectly, traversing the line between the minimum level of acceptable, contemporary dynamic whilst willfully resisting the allure of too many ticks with too much wedge and absolutely no idea.
If you need the thick end of 200 from a non-out and out supercar, the Ferrari 456 is an acceptable alternative, as detailed in Buckley's latest piece in the latest Autocar (he prefers the Continental.)
Those Arnages, though: they may be too small next to the prev gen Rs but for simply aiming at the vermin and shouting loudly at their body piercings, what else is there?

It would lower the tone quite a lot. It does make the scene from the Italian job spring to mind when Cain collects his DB4 from the garage. "You must have shot a lot of tigers" "Yes I use a machine gun". You would definately have to ask Mrs Flashgit to collect of for you to avoid being labelled as 'dodgy'.

Glad to see that you are on good form Simon despite presumably having to endure the inevitable seasonal onrush of the proletariat.

Are you suggesting that my good lady is dodgy?

Having met your good lady you know full well the only dodgy one is you. I am suggesting she might raise your image quite a lot actually

Now I'm in denial - most assuredly so
derestrictor is quite correct and describes the pecking order perfectly.
Think John Cleese, Ronnie Barker and Ronnie Corbett in the 'Upper/middle/lower class' sketch.
Arnage R.
Arnage T, Continental R/T.
VW thingies (know your place).
