Silver Shadow I - Ownership?
Discussion
I’m finding my eye drawn to a Silver Shadow I recently.
I’ve owned retro German and Japanese cars in the last 10 years, mostly 90’s and early 00’s. Never anything as old as a Shad.
I was wondering if anyone can say what they’re like as an ownership prospect.
My budget would be £15-20k, which seems to buy a decent one with low mileage and good provenance. I wouldn’t be doing loads of miles in it, but I do like to use my cars regularly and in all conditions (I make sure they’re well prepped and protected). So, once or twice a week, probably no more than 5k/year. Having said that, I don’t want something that’s a headache to live with and that I can’t just get on and use - with good regular maintenance.
Having never driven one, I assume that they’re lovely to waft along in. I know the fuel bill will be high, but this is offset somewhat by tax and insurance compared to something more modern.
So, what are they like to own?

Hi. I can’t help with ownership experience, but I’m battling a similar obsession, not helped by the like of Harry’s Garage and Gary Mavers YouTube content…
There are a couple of Shadow II’s in the Readers Cars section, but not I’s.
From what I can work out.
1. Specialist inspection
2. Bodywork and rust
3. Hydraulics
Inflation adjusted, these were a £100k+ car new, so have the same running costs, even if they are £10/£20k, so a deep breath, before diving, I think, but from a short drive in a 1969 one, which wasn’t right, these things are an epic antidote to the frustrations of modern motoring.

A P5B is a nice thing and undoubtedly a lot more financial sense, but when you look at this…..
