Bentley Turbo Heater Issues

Hello all
Newbies here I am afraid - appreciate being diverted to any other threads by anyone of easier
We have a 1987 Bentley Turbo R - When the heater is on defrost/windscreen mode we get red hot heat coming through
As soon as you switch to Low/Auto/High it goes cold and sometimes hot but then goes cold again
From reading uk heat only comes from the screen and footwell again is that correct? Can’t seem to get much from the footwell either!
Is it me or is this a very complicated system? Or am I just thick!
Am I right in saying they the Auto/Facia switch is supposed to re-centre itself once you switch it up and down? If so ours does not if you switch it up it’s stays up same for down - could this be anything to do with it?
