Hello,

I used to own a silver spirit 2 and I might be a silver spirit owner again.

I have been looking at phantoms and the price have now dropped to £70k for a nice car. I went to view one today. First impressions were handsome, loved dials, steering wheel and general look of interior. However some of the interior really disappointed me.

Obviously the “I” drive was dated but that was expected. The pop-out trays, ash tray, tv covers, seat controls under the arm rest and sunroof lining was disappointing and all were like parts from a mass produced Mercedes S class or BMW lol.

I then sat in a Silver Spirit again and loved it. It had all the RR character, style and luxury but the parts that let the interior down didn’t remind me of a mass production car.

I was thinking I could buy a Silver spirit and save a lot of money and enjoy the RR experience.

I am going to look at another phantom with more of an open mind because maybe I was expecting more.

I do remember sitting in a phantom limelight edition years ago and it blew me away but that was a very limited edition. I’m sure the new cars are out of this world.

There are some oddly plastic parts in a Phantom I agree. It's perhaps a measure of the quality of financial planning not the quality of component manufacturing that means that Goodwood R-R makes money and Crewe R-R teatered continually on the edge of bankruptcy. There's a fine line between creating an undeniably special character and making a profit that the R-R team in the 1970s and 1980s weren't particularly adept at walking it appears.

I am glad you understood my point. I was not trying to be controversial. I will have a look at a few and maybe a Bentley for comparison.

Get a Silver Spirit. The last proper Crewe RR.

Yes repairs and maintenance will be £1-2k per year, but that is basically eclipsed by the depreciation on something newer.

From a long time happy (biased) SZ owner smile

I tested a Bentayga a couple of years ago. Drove like an X5, smart interior, but lacked character to stir the soul. It felt and smelled like a top end AMG or BMW.

Jumped back into my Spirit II, where I can snort leather in its lounge all day. Each to their own, but I know which I prefer.

I actually think that modern RR interiors are distinctive and rather lovely compared to other current cars.

...but had a ride in a shadow 2 the other day and aren’t they bloody lovely inside? It’s like the leather comes from a different - wholly superior - animal.
