1933 Rolls Royce Sports Saloon
Discussion
Hi all,
I am trying to find any historical details/photos on a 1933 Rolls Royce Sports Saloon, Chassis No. GEX29.
It is currently being restored by my partners grandfather.
Do you have any recommendations for where to start?
These are the details of the vehicle I know for certain:
- GEX29 Chassis Number
- First production model.
- Black & Mushroom.
- 225 engine.
Many Thanks
James

I think your best bet is contacting the Rolls-Royce Enthusiats' Club. They hold the production records of all pre-Goodwood Rolls-Royces ever built: www.rrec.org.uk.
Good luck!

Hi, if you contact or join the RREC, they have the Sir Henry Royce Foundation located at Hunt House, there they hold the archives on all cars that they have processed. They are in the process of archiving digitally all the company records, you might have luck from them as they will hold the chassis cards on the car. I'll look through my old club bulletins to see if there's any mention of it.
Hi James,
Just seen this question pop up - and as an avid fan of pre-war Rolls-Royce and Bentleys, I couldn't resist having a dig through the books to understand more about the car.
Joining the RREC is an excellent idea - there is a huge amount of information available in the Archives (run by the lovely Abbie) - and you should be able to get the original order sheets and factory build cards for the car.
In advance of that, the definitive "bible" on Rolls-Royce 20/25s (The Rolls-Royce 20/25HP by Tom C. Clarke) lists the following:
"X" series Rolls-Royce 20/25 - introduced January 1933. Comes along after the significant mid-life updates done to the car (at chassis GBT22 and GKT22) - so now has higher compression engine, synchromesh on 3rd and top gear and significant internal engine modifications to crankshaft etc.
Specifically:
GEX29, engine K6E, Off test 04.02.33, Barker body 4 door 4 light saloon, body number 6677. First owner was Dr A Sidney-Vernon, registration number JJ8587. There are quite a number of comments in the book about it - Auction sales at Sotherby's June 1993 and November 1996, as well as at Brooks in 2000. The last mention in the book is the sale of the car by The Real Car Company in North Wales in 2009.
Some pictures:
The car in its original condition - apparently it had the owner's initial "ASV" on the doors
As sold by The Real Car Company in 2009
I am sure your partner's grandfather is much further through the restoration now - I know we'd all love to hear more about it. There are at least 2 Rolls-Royce 20/25 Reader's Cars threads on the forum and I know a number of other ones have popped up from time to time.
GEX29 is a stunning looking car - I hope it is getting plenty of love and use!
Take care,
AF
