Dear All,

I have taken the plunge and cancelled off an item from my bucket list and bought a 1989/90 Turbo R and its lovely. However, I have bought it with three things needed to be resolved:

1. The Oil Pressure gauge seems to have failed or maybe the sensor has as the car is stuck off the scale on the oil pressure front when the oil pressure was checked and found to be ok. Is this a know problem and where should I look for the culprit? Gauge or sensor?

2. The drivers seats works perfectly, heater and all but the passenger one, not one bit functions. Not the heater, lumbar or seat moves. I wonder if this is a fuse or relay and if so where will I find it to check?

3. I imagine the previous owner had his arm hanging out the window and had a gold chain or metal watch on as there is scratches and a mark in the drivers side door cap. There is an article on refurbishing them but the wood up top is a lot darker to the rest of the panel. If I take it off, does anyone know who can refurbish it?

I am looking forward to summer and taking the beast for a drive, so I have a bit of time to resolve these quirks. Thanks for reading and your help!

Best Wishes,

Truffs

Seat movement sounds like it is the ecu. Just had a similar problem in my 1990 Turbo R. The batteries tend to leak and damage the circuit boards. An exchange is about £500 but I'm trying to find someone to repair the existing one as I want to keep the car 100% original as it left the factory. The original unit has the date and initials of both the fitter and the checker.

That sounds similar so where is the ECU you mention?

Sounds like its something that can be checked and proved or disproved.

This is excellent Jeff. Thank you for your help.

I have one final question before I get out there. How on earth do you remove the lower seat cushion?

Hi Truffs,

It evidently varies by year. However, there's a thread going on at the moment over on the RollsRoyceForums about it:

http://www.rollsroyceforums.com/forums/27-sz-motor...

Lots of info there.

Cheers,
Jeff.

I should post some photos of ours!

I know a guy who could do the wood, let me see about tracking his details for you.

It's nearly always the seat ecu. Both of mine failed within a couple of months of each other, £412 all in each.

It's nearly always the oil pressure sender unit. You could be unlucky and have the gauge itself fail. Check the sender by earthing the wire from it to the engine block and checking the gauge goes full sweep. If so, the sender is faulty.

I have no idea about the wood, need to get a few bits re-done on mine, almost tempted to learn how and do it myself. Stripping the wood out of the car is labour intensive but not difficult, just fiddly in places.

That would be ace. There is a youtube video and a series of posts on the website but I don`t feel very lucky with that. I will do the electronics which I feel much happier with!

As to pictures, I will have to get out there in daylight, once I am off work I will start snapping...

Chapman & Cliff did the dash. Wasn't badly damaged but it was just refined and re-laquered.

I'll try and get some photos up in due time. It's garaged right now but hopefully soon. I think you'll be impressed! It's not your standard Turbo R. biggrin

The Gauge is at above maximum pressure before the engine even starts! Also when you press the oil level button it drops to zero. A quick dip with the dipstick shows it to be in the middle of the dipstick marks. It looks a good colour too so I am confident there is oil and it has to be wrong when the oil pressure is above max before the engine is turned on and has not been run in three days!

I will try what you suggest when its not dark and the missus has finished torturing me by dragging me around the damn shops every time I am home.

Well if they do door cappings from 70 quid then they can have it. I am pretty certain my wood working skills could cost me more than that!

Sometimes it's easier and cheaper to pay someone else to do it if it's going to require you to buy tools, materials and time! Will get some photos up soon. smile
