Parking Tips?

I was wondering if anyone had any good parking tips that they would like to share (apart from the obvious, avoid multi-storey car parks, etc).

I've always had large cars, Range Rovers, Mercedes S Class LWB, etc but the new Mulsanne is taking it to another level..... To give you an idea, I was out with my wife the other day and we stopped off at Waitrose to get a few bits and pieces, I parked at the far end of the car park (which was empty) and took two spaces. I could see that the front end was in the space, however, when I got out I realised I hadn't taken two spaces at all but a total of four! The rear end was overhanging well into another two spaces!

Regular sized parking bays also seem to be too small (unless you can find an end space).

So I was wondering, do any Bentley or Rolls Royce owners have any good parking tips - Or perhaps, has anyone experienced preferential parking at Restaurants, Hotels, etc and how did you obtain this?

I have found a pretty good London Hotel with underground valet parking - I want to use my Bentley as much as possible, but what to do with it at the other end is something I feel you always need to consider - Any tips that anyone can give, I think would be useful for all?

I just park it in the parking lot away from other cars. The mall, fast food places, and even multi-level lots are fine. Then again this is the States and Bentley cars are extremely common. Doesn't even get a second look when I drop my child off at school. In the UK I've seem people spit at nice cars... or worse. Where are you located? Maybe move to Monaco?

I'll always park well away from other cars if can. If necessary I'll take two spaces but I don't want people to take umbrage and damage my car because they think I'm taking liberties. I just view it as one of those things and if I really need to go somewhere and parking is a problem then I'll take the Volvo.

So saying that I was at a BDC do and someone in a Wraith(!) put a ding in my door which I had to get removed. If it's going to happen, it will!

Malicious behaviour is something that is a big worry here in the UK, or it's something that concerns me at least - I felt the Ferrari I just sold was even more at risk.

Mulsanne's do attract quite a lot of attention, particularly where I live here in the North of England, not so much in London or the South East where I lived previously.

I think in the U.S. it's a lot easier to park a large car - large cars in the states are pretty much the norm, here in the UK it's the opposite, our roads are much smaller, the parking bays are tiny by comparison and we simply don't have much land available - Unlike America.... I do envy you having that kind of space.

Allister, last time I was in the UK saw someone purposefully spit on a Ferrari as it drove by on the street. Also saw the remaining bits of how some woman got mugged in an underground street crossing in London. Perhaps between all those troubles, all the intrusive video cameras, etc it may be time to reconsider your chosen living location? Perhaps the City Of London, which we all know has different laws and police than the country, would be better?

Please come move to the States or other places in the world. Michael Schumacher loved it here during his prime as do many others. Perhaps Monaco or a more appropriate location is in order? No need to have to put up with a population that seems to have little respect for others' accomplishments and property, plus a very intrusive government with extremely high tax rate on your earnings and then even more on things you purchase. It bewilders me why some people stay at such oppressive locations that interferes with your inherent rights and freedom.

I tend to only take my Arnage to places where I know I can park it reasonably safely. I take it on the continent at least once a year and pay particular attention to hotel parking facilities when booking.
Supermarkets and Multi stories are out, not because of "envy" damage but because of careless parking by others. In these places I take my wife's Mercedes A class which has already been scratched on all four corners!

Paying VAT is a joke.... on those who pay it. Yet must thank it as I get discounts and then VAT back so nice reduced costs on watches and luxury goods when on holiday. Beaches of pebbles must be a joke. Bad weather, no problem here. Ease of parking on the street without worry, sure, even with a soft top convertible.

Am serious, all you who complain about the safety of your car and whatnot should truly reconsider your choice of location. Monaco is glorious! Swiss mountain roads are a joy to drive. Great weather year around.... am enjoying it here. So stop all the complaining and make some changes in life. Happy life, keep more of your earnings, have no worries about driving and parking your car.... Have you seen the lovely ladies in South Beach Miami, Southern California and Florida...

Many here are well to do and quite smart, so now is a good time to rethink things as the global scenery is yours to enjoy. No need to be limited. Live life without limits.

Well as a native of the UK I find what you have to say rather insulting and I am surprised that you have chosen to write what you have on a site mainly populated by Brit's and you admit to being serious too.

I seem to remember paying sales tax which varied between states.
You haven't visited all our beaches then.
The weather is the weather, it isn't great all over the US either.
I think you have your fair share of ugly, overweight bloaters over there too.

I have been lucky enough to have visited various parts of the US and stayed as a guest in people's homes and I found the American people to be polite, generous and extremely friendly, so I clearly cannot paint all Americans as being rude, ignorant and stupid so you must just be a one off.

I think it's great for everyone to have an opinion and these will often differ - I personally love and hate certain things about the UK and it's people, but then the same applies to the USA.

I think you both (enjoythe music / buyer&seller) make some very good points, I do love my country and would not leave it permanently but then I do also love America and so will be looking for a second home their at some point in the next five years, as soon as I need to be less involved with work.

I hate multistorey carparks and have to use the one at Heathrow T5 on a fairly regular basis, its a PITA. The cars are not mine but I still don't like leaving them there even though its only normally for an hour or so at a time.

Thanks Allister for understanding. Like you, I may enjoy the USA yet there are places that are also quite enjoyable. Hopefully this bit of thread gave others a moment of pause to consider their location options to enhance their life and lifestyle. It does sadden me to know there are parts of the world like the UK where people seem oblivious to how bad things are. Perhaps it is the slow conditioning until you do not realize how troubled things are, such as the analogy of slowly boiling a frog until.... Allister, when you arrive in the States if you're nearby would enjoy buying you a nice drink and we can enjoy a wonderful aged cigar from my collection (if you enjoy such things).

The suggestion that we should change our domicile just so we could park our cars in safety is losing the plot. Yes there are exotic places where one can park in safety. I have parked a Continental R on the harbour at Villefranche along with a Ferrari Dino, Ferrari 430 and an Audi R8 3 days and night without a problem. Monaco is great, just pull up outside the Hotel De Paris and chuck the porter your keys and he will park it and bring it back unmarked when you want to go but remember what Somerset Maugham once said that Monaco is "A sunny place for shady people"

I am more than happy to live in the Uk, pay my taxes, and just take care where I park my car. No disrespect to the USA but life under Trump or Hilary leaves me open mouthed!!! Good luck with that

I am a Brit and still have a house there (in the south) but moved to the US 15 years ago. Parking was not the main reason funnily enough, although I have to say it is very easy here even with the Arnage; the spaces are much bigger, and lots less full, so you can take your pick of spaces. I do find parking in the UK a challenge now, even in much smaller cars. Picking up a hire car at Heathrow is funny - getting the car out of the car park almost impossible even in a tiny car (and I remind you I am a brit and started out like most in a mini).

In the UK I tend to try to park on the road rather than in spaces, which are so small, and always stay in hotels with private parking and usually tip someone to keep an eye out. I have a DB4 in the UK and have taken that all over, including camping at Le Mans without incident. It's narrow, which helps, and I always leave windows open a bit with a few personal items left out, in the hope it will humanize the car and people will take more care. There's no radio to steal and a thief wouldn't know how to start it so I don't worry about theft!

Welsh, try to avoid politics, yet hope the Brexit goes though so the UK preserves it's unique identity. Greece is a good example of how things can go horribly wrong when a country gives away it's sovereignty.

PS: If the UK wants to stay in the Eurozone, they also must give up the Pound Sterling and switch to the Euro bank currency. It is the only way to be fair to the other members and share the risk of staying within the Eurozone.

You cannot have it both ways!!! Politics are either in or out. The Brits will decide and hopefully we will get properly reasoned arguments on which to base a decision. One side is currently overplaying their hand and all arguments, even those from internationally and independent financial institutions are dismissed as scaremongering by the other side without any counter arguments or statistics. We live in interesting times though whatever the result we will still have to pay VAT!!

Perhaps we should group together and buy a nice-sized island and declare it as an independent nation. It would also solve the parking problems

Mykonos could possibly be 'bought' cheap. A few keystrokes in a computer and we remove all Greek debit in exchange for the island's ownership and independance. Great weather, music, parties every night. Tanning on those lovely beaches and the beautiful clean blue waters... Eventually we'll forget about driving and simply enjoy life
