Hi all,

First posting from a newbie.

I have the great good fortune to be the current custodian of the 1985 Bentley Eight show car displayed at the SECC, Glasgow during the first Scottish Motor Show held there November/December 1985. There were three models displayed; an acrylic white Rolls Royce Silver Spirit with dark blue hide piped in parchment, a Turbo R with dark blue hide, and the Bentley Eight in royal blue metallic with light blue hide, alloy wheels and narrow band whitewall tyres. Each of the three cars had seat inserts in medium weight kilt quality Holyrood tartan cloth in homage to Her Majesty The Queen, who visited the show during its second week. And the cars were fitted with a hand-engraved commemorative silver plaque in the glove box, at a cost of £88.00 each.

I wonder if either of the two other cars still exists ? The Silver Spirit was 14509 and the Turbo R 14549.

I am searching for a catalogue from the show or indeed any literature or photographs showing the Rolls Royce/Bentley stand. The nearest I have managed to date is an engraved Edinburgh crystal whisky tumbler.

Anyone any advice or help to offer ?

Congratulations on your car! I think I saw it advertised for sale near Bristol last year?

The Turbo R is listed in the RREC car database as registration "NFS27", but no current owner (member) is shown.

You may also want to try the SZ Register on facebook.

Hi 9six4,

Thank you so much for your response. Very interesting.

I too saw the Bristol car advertised last year. Although it was very similar to my own, and possibly based on it, I suspect that it is a vehicle made for a 1986 show as a display model. I did have an inconclusive correspondence with the advertiser.

Interesting about the Turbo R - at least it seems possible that the car still exists.

I don't do Facespace, or the Twaddlesphere, or Crapchat, or any of the self-publicity methods of diluting one's personality, but hopefully something might emerge from those who are more techno-savvy than I.

Now back to waiting amid copious oral injections of the Scottish wine.

Many thanks again.

A little more, rather confusing, information has emerged concerning my 1985 Scottish Motor Show Bentley Eight.

The 2012 Bentley Drivers Club list of owners and their Bentleys includes this car identified by its chassis number (but no registration mark) apparently owned by a member in Linlithgow. The car has throughout its life always been registered in Scotland, but never in Linlithgow. Throughout the period 2001 to 2012 inclusive the car was registered to an owner in the Scottish borders, with whom I have corresponded.

So the 2012 BDC listing was quite specious, for what reason I do not know.

Still searching for a copy of the 1985 Scottish Motor Show catalogue, or any other ephemera relevant to the car.

How about some pictures? I'd love to see the interior....

Cheers,

I can cope with the complexities of the Bentley hydraulic systems, but with a camera I am an absolute clown. The camera has not yet been developed which I cannot wreck.

And I did attempt to upload some images but I was, not unexpectedly, quite banjaxed.

I shall seek assistance from an averagely competent seven-year-old grandchild, and make a further effort at presenting photos, but don't hold your breath.

"banjaxed". That's a good word. I like it.
