Hi. I was driving down the road this evening when the car completely lost power. Unfortunately this included the power steering which was a little entertaining at 60 mph, but I managed to guide the car safely off the road. The warning were along the lines of "cruise mode", "check oil" and the battery/oil lights - presumably associated with the engine being stopped. There was also a gear check warning, but I can't remember exactly what. The car remains where she stopped awaiting attention. Any idea what may have caused this. It is a 1996 mark IV turbo r. Thanks.

Not an expert nut when mine went in for a service, they changed the two relays on the drivers side front under the bonnet. Apparently they do this and can be a bugger to find what is wrong.

the engine just cut out, from the sound of things - so a multitude of possibilities. Did you try to start it again?

Did you manage to find the cause in the end?

Yes thanks. It was a relay - simple fix, but quite dramatic when it happened.

Do you know what relay it was?

I am running a Bentley Turbo RT and it might be good Intel for the future.

Kind regards,

Steve.

I'll get back to you. They are apparently prone to failing and it's a good idea to carry a spare.

I look forward to hearing what relay it was.

Are you enjoying the car?

There was an article in the RREC magazine some years ago discussing this very fault. (Copy Attached) The unit in question on my 2000 Continental R subsequently failed with exactly the symptoms described here. Fortunately I had bought two of the relays and a quick swap cured the problem

Hi,

Just purchased two relays on line from flying spares just in case.

A bit expensive £12 inc vat each lol

I did not realize you could buy a part as cheap as this for a Bentley it felt quite good.
Again thanks for the advice.

Regards,

Steve.
