This has started about 6 months ago. When I get in the car after a day at the office, for the first 5 minutes or so the car makes a loud screeching sound when I accelerate especially when I make turns. The mechanic said it could be that the belts need to be adjusted and he adjusted the belts but it did not help. That's anyone have any ideas what might be causing this? This may not be related but when I plug in my iPhone charger in the cigarette lighter and accelerate the car makes a long screeching sound almost wish Lane. Have no idea if it's related but just thought I'd throw this out. Thanks a lot for any advice. This has been driving me crazy.

Certainly sounds like a slipping belt if it's screeching - could be slipping due to poor tension, or due to increased load from fault in PAS pump. More of a squeal may be fluid related

I guess it's more of a squeal. Sort of like when you're accelerating while pressing on the breaks. And it only happens when the car's not been driven for 4+ hours. Thanks!

You could ask the same question here:

it's quite a "techy" forum!

Steering racks are also capable of squealing. Do you have any signs of a hydraulic leak from the rack? Is the hydraulic fluid for the steering system at the correct level. Do you have a full service record for the car, stating what has been done and by whom?

It's all pointing at belts. If they are old they can squeal even if correctly adjusted. You can buy special spray at motor factors to shut them up but I find WD40 works well.

If that doesn't help have a good at the alternator. I can't think that the extra load from charging you iphone would load it much but topping up the battery after starting might.

My money would still be on the drive belts though.

Good luck
