I am considering a new set of tyres for my T2, and have been offered the following:-

1. Avon Turbosteel 235/70VR15 The original equipment I believe
2. Avon CR11B 235/70R15 V
2. Michelin XVS 235/70HR15 rather more expensive
3. Dunlop Grandtrek SJ6 235/70R15 pretty reasonably priced - look like tyres for a 4x4

The car is currently on Goodyear. Any advice?

your realistic choice is between the top three.

although financially tempting, 4x4 tyres with speed ratings lower than "H" should be off your menu for safety reasons. In most European countries, its illegal to fit tyres with lower speed rating than the car is capable of. Whilst its not absolutely prohibited here, I'd hate to be trying to make a case for lower-rated tyres.

Fair point.

The change is being driven by the fact that though the current tyres look fine and have plenty of tread they are 5 years old, because though the car is used regularly, it has not covered an enormous mileage (about 10k in 5 years). Am I being overcautious?

Unless you can see any signs of age (cracking), then almost certainly "yes".

is the car kept inside or outside ?

if kept outside where the tyre is exposed to UV light ( the main damaging agent ) I'd say ten years is about right to bin them just on age alone - with sidewall cracking evidence being an "early-life failure"

if kept inside, then longer

The Turbospeeds, definitely. They just look right on a Shadow.

Avons. Avoid any cheap 4x4 or mud and sow tyres. The noise they will make will be unwelcome in a Royce.

I have some tyres up for grabs bought new from Camskill for £750 which suit Shadows/ T2. Ill take £470 collected or £470+courier. Cant take less or wife will divrce me.
The are brand new, never rolled, but were wheel mounted which is why i cant return them. They didnt fit my W108 merc.
