Hi everyone,

I am toying with the idea of getting a phantom or mulsanne and would like to know anyone's thoughts on ownership of the cars through experience.

Thanks for your help.

Depends on what you want and how the car will be used. For me personally I feel Bentley missed a truck in not taking on the Phantom head on. The Phantom is still in a class of one. The Mulsanne is a very good car in it's own right but not a RR competitor. Only the price is similar but the RR is nothing like the the B to own / drive.

Have you seen the Phantom Aviator edition? that alone I think would settle it, not sure if they have sold them all it was/is a very limited run. They are rather special.

I've had a spur before and I would have another but obviously the mulsanne and phantoms are a class above size and finish wise. I am looking at 2005-2008 cars phantom wise and was wondering if anyone had any information regarding spec changes on cars in this age group?

Mulsannes I presume have not had any major spec changes yet?

Cheers russell.

There were subtle changes along the way, mainly under the skin. Get the newest you can and it may even have some Provenance warranty left.

I've never been a lover of blue cars but rolls and Bentley do suit the darker blue shades well. I love them when they are two tone ie paler on the bonnet, roof, and boot and a nice dark shade on the bottom. It's a shame there isn't so many around.

I've started looking at ghosts (been watching sixth sense smile ) now and I'm thinking they're good value when you can get year old cars with a few thousand miles on for £160k ish. That's virtually a brand new car with massive discount.

Anyone on here got a ghost?

Ghost is nice but not in the same league as the Phantom, or the Mulsanne interior-wise. Ghost contains far too much plastic on the inside and outside. But it is a useable daily driver unlike the Phantom.

We've had our Phantom for nearly 2 years now, from new, having had a number of Arnage's previously. We have recently toy'd with the idea of changing it for a Mulsanne, but having been loaned one, to me the Phantom really is a step on, has massive road presence and really is special. Don't get me wrong the Mulsanne is special but never in a way that the Phantom is. We have covered about 8,000 miles in ours, its had to go back a few times for various niggles/issues, service has been OK, not exceptional. Build quality is good but not £400k good, roadside assistance borders on appalling/shocking, fuel economy good for such a big car, on the few long continentals journeys we have done (2,000 miles each trip) we have averaged 21.1 mpg.
From a practical point of view its pretty big for parking and it attracts attention when leaving it anywhere. feel free to ask any questions

True that: nicest scheme I've seen is that on the Grey Goose special phantom.

Ghosts aren't in the same league IMO: the 7 Series architecture shines through, and its the detailing that makes them lack a little spirit e.g. the standard steering wheel.

Also, the saving could be a false economy, as the car still has an awful long way to fall. Phantoms, by contrast, cling to their value: haven't seen one under 90k yet despite 10year old design.

If you want to save heres a good one: http://www.autotrader.co.uk/classified/advert/2013...

however completely wrong spec with reference to my previous comments haha

I saw that one but I think I'd rather have the 2008 car @ £145k as that car is actually a 2006 car with a facelift.

Regards the ghost I agree that the 7 series base will shine through but the size difference and also the performance is relevant to me as I expect to use it for anything and everything and maybe the phantom may be a little too much for everyday use. Saying that I will 100% have a phantom or it's replacement one day whether it's the next car I get or second or third it will happen at some point as its one of my ambitions to do so and I've always liked rolls royces.

I've also had a 2002 7 series since 2005 and BMW is my favourite German marque so I was happy when BMW got the rolls name in 1998.

Anyway I don't plan to buy in the immediate future so have a few months to think about it.

Please keep the thoughts coming regards the roll's and the mulsanne.

I did a euro trip once in a Ferrari 360 spider just before we had kids in 2007, had a great time going to Italy, Monaco, barca, Marbella and Madrid over 2 weeks and will definitely do it again one day when kids are a little older and probably when I get one of the above cars. Anyone who hasn't tried it it really is a great holiday to take.

Regards the car I was wondering how much the services are and are they done for free when the car is new?

Sounds like you had to deal with roadside assistance? Can you say why this was?

When you buy a new Phantom the services are free for 4 yrs and can be extended for a further 2. The only thing I've paid for is tyres and wiper blades. Look out for corrosion though as they seem to give Merc a run for their money on that one.

The first time was when the car was 3 weeks old and we were 1500 miles from home, 2 young children, it was the end of August and we were pushed for time to make the ferry at Santander to get the children back to school (my daughters first time in Prep school so did not want to be late) the day before leaving the Algarve the hood jammed and ripped out a strip that seals the front and rear windows leaving a inch gap running the full length of the window. On ringing the supplying dealer back in the UK was told to tape it up as best I could, I then phoned the factory who were not much more helpful, in the end Mondial refused to attend as they were not confident with dealing with the car and there is no dealer support down in Portugal, so we taped it up and drove home, as you can imagine that was far from the end of the story, I had a few harsh words to say on my return to the UK, since that time we have had the misfortune of using them 3 more times

on second thoughts as well I think the Series 2 is possibly worth the extra outlay... plus the satisfaction of commissioning a new RR

That's interesting because I prefer the S1 to drive. I don't feel the new gearbox is needed and is not as smooth. The new nav is outstanding though.

you may be right: I suppose unnecessary gear changes lead to a less wafty driving experience.
The new lights are more resolved though IMO, and the satnav much more user friendly
