According to Fifth Gear the Rolls Royce Silver Spirit will appreciate in value about 80% in the next 5 years.
As I am saving to buy a Bentley Turbo R, which I guess will do sort of the same thing if this is true, I do not like this!

What do you think: Is this a load of b*ll*cks, a sort of selffulfilling prophecy or the truth?

It's fair to say that the value of Spirit's has certainly firmed up recently but to suggest that they "will appreciate in value by 80% in the next 5 years" is being some what optmistic and was perhaps written/spoken by someone with a few in their garage. I know I'm stating the obvious, but as the last of that shape SZ cars was produced nearly 15 years ago (17 for a Spirit) there aren't too many good cars that come on to the market and those that do will fetch a decent price once the buyers have a look at several bad ones and then find the decent one and will be prepared to pay the extra for a good example. Also, where they can be compared, a Rolls will generally command more than the equivalent Bentley, it depends what age of car your are saving for as a lot will depend on how many cars were produced in that period which will then reflect the price. I trust this makes sense and helps.

As long as they put it in writing and guarantee they'll buy it, sure you have nothing to lose. Other than that, it is pure speculation as any longtime car collector knows. Markets ebb and flow... and change.

So yes, have them put it in writing with a guarantee to purchase. Be careful, they could go out of business and then legally not be liable. SO you have that factor to consider as well.

When was this on tv? I don't think it will happen. The shadow certainly hasn't increased much.

If you spend ten grand on a good one now, it could be worth eighteen thousand in five years, who knows?

It might cost you eight thousand in maintenance though.

If it's any consolation, I spent many years in the Mercedes-Benz world and just 6-8 years ago, I could buy things like 300SEL 6.3s and 450SEL 6.9s for pennies on the dollar (280SL Pagodas I should note too). NOW, however, even the saloons are fetching big money, at least here in the US. Had I known, I'd have held on to all of my 6.3s as I could've trebled my money!

I think SZs will rise in value, and it already seems to be happening with late cars. Again, here in the US, a few years ago you could buy late Turbo Rs and Brooklands for low $20K's, now they seem to be fetching high $20s/low $30s.

I was discussing it with another PHer last night--about how/if my '53 R-Type will climb in value in the next few years--which I think will happen. Now all I have to do is keep it in rude health till then!

The spirit came from my Middlesex section of the Rrec, as a result of a media request. The car was filmed last year by our section chairman and is now owned by a mechanic.
