So my tires are due for changing. I refuse to pay $500 for tires from avon again. Goodyear and pirelli stopped making their 255 65 R15 tires.. I read on a site that someone was thinking of using the 275/60r15 0r a smaller 255/70R15.

Has anyone tried this or other sizes? I am stuck with 15 inch wheels. Surely there is some other size that would not rub against the wheel well and would be cheaper than the Avon CR27? Thanks in advance

About eight years ago a chap I know was in the same position. He searched eveywhere and eventually found the tyres fitted to one of the Ford pickup trucks were the same size.He said the the car drove fine on.

Remy,

I'm in the same boat as you. I had to pop $650USD/each for Avon Turbospeeds on my last Turbo R. My current '89 with the 15" wheels presently has some pretty decent Goodyear Eagles on it in the right size, but those are no longer made so when the time comes, I'll be scouring all the tire dealers for something suitable to avoid the overpriced Avon debacle, if possible. There was a Pirelli Scorpion that a lot of guys were using, although it was an SUV tire, it was available in the right 15" size, but I suspect it killed the ride quality...

if you search balmoral green's posts, I'm pretty sure he had a solution with a different size wheel

don't forget that the SUV tyres are not of the correct speed rating. In most countries, that's illegal. If not, I wouldn't want to be trying to justify that choice with an insurance company if I'd had an accident.

Okay guys, I am looking at this tire, bf Goodrich, 255/60/R15. So it is not V speed rated but I don't plan to be doing much driving over 90 anyway. Load index is 1894 vs 2094 for the avon. It is 1 inch shorter overall than the avon tires. Anyone see any problem with going with this tire?

Thanks in advance

Let's work the #s here:

Original size of 255/65-15 = 28.1" diameter, 10.04" width, 6.53" sidewall and 88.1" circumference

Closer in overall dimensions would be a 235/75-15 which = 28.9" diameter, 9.25" width, 6.94" sidewall and 90.7" circumference

Especially for a Turbo R. For a RR equivalent, I'd say you can get away with the size you suggest but I'd go slightly larger for the winged B and I don't think that will present any fitment issues.

I thought of the size you refer to,but opted for the 255/65/15 because of the slightly larger width. Ideally I would have liked a wider tire but did not want to get 4 of them and find any rubbing problems. Will let you all know how it goes when they arrive and I get them installed.
