Just posted this on the Jaguar forum...it would be interesting to read comments from both sides...!

hi..just toying with the idea of a Daimler Super V8 (2006 or so) Vs a similar year Bentley (Conti GT or Flying Spur).
Anyone got any views to help me decide?

Thing is, the Bentley is probably a better car, but you can't exactly drive it to work and let your colleagues see how much I am overpaid!

With the Daimler, similar ride, comfort, spec....but it is 'just a Jag' to the untrained eye....so more likely to be accepted at work...

Running costs for the Daimler probably 50% of the Bentley?

anyway....over to you knowledgeable folks....

no disrespect but its almost laughable that you would mention the two cars in the same sentance, go drive a gt then try the others,

i might buy the wife a rolex watch or a fake one off the bay.....................

Thanks Conti T...I guess the 4wd helps with the driving dynamics and I am sure it is better built...but if I bought a Bentley, would I be able to park it in the carpark and not cause offence?

I've had both, we run a new GT alongside a Super V8 which my wife run as a company car, with a driver. however we spent many happy miles behind the wheel of the Daimler, its a incredible under rated car, the main thing being its very discreet but listed at nearly 90k new. Your problem will be finding one from 2006 onwards as I believe there were only 20 or so registered and some would have been run as company cars for CEO's, covering huge mileages my wife had 2 in her company and they were both run to well over 100,000 miles . The bentley is more powerful and a better car but the Daimler is quirky and fun, most were only 4 seaters as well unless they had the bench rear seat specified, feel free to Pm me if you want further details

Thanks for the comments dazzalse.

I would lean towards the Daimler as there are more Jaguars on the road compared to Bentleys and I don't want to draw the wrong kind of crowd, you know, the ones who have nothing better to do than to scratch a nice car just 'cos they don't have one....

I have just moved to Toronto and don't know if I will stay here or return to London, England. In either case, I think the Daimler (Vanden Plas over here?) is the one I would choose, although if I don't buy a Bentley now, I never will (almost 50yo now)....

This statement about people scratching nice cars etc is one you see regularly, yet i park my cars anyewhere i park the supersports down a cruddy back street in crewe a short walk from my real old school rough gym and have never had any problems with any of the cars i have owned and as for upsetting people about being over paid, fk them its your life live it this aint no rehersal, look at there life styles do they drink/smoke/do drugs/have a mortgage they can,t afford ???you have your bentley matey,,

Thanks CONTI T...yes, you are right...it is my life...I have -or will :-)- have worked hard for it...I turn 50 end of next year so what better time?!
Only thing is, I never thought I was good enough to own a Bentley and will have to start researching this in earnest now....
will probably buy a Jaguar as a run around for the moment though, as too much happening in my life..but come middle of next year, I will start to test drive a Bentley and get myself ready for this sea-change....

Thanks for the comments once again...and the encouragement......
