RenaultSport Megane 250 (2010 onward). Any good?
Discussion
The wife currently owns an Alfa Brera SV6 Prodrive which in my opinion is a bloody good car. I'd go so far as to say that now its run in (now on 8k miles) its not unlike driving a Porsche Carrera S as far as handling goes. However, as we are soon to be moving house she has started the search for something witgh better fuel economy. The Brera currently returns 15 to 21mpg which is pretty much the same as my E61 M5.
Having had no joy looking at Mini's, BM 3 series coupes and Audi A3s and A4s she caught glimpse of the latest RenaultSport Megane. I checked out the specs and on paper it looks to be very comparable to the Brera, only having better fuel economy and being a smidge quicker. Now, before I go booking her a test drive I need to know if its any good.
The mini jcw was too asthmatic, the german line too clinical and the rest is just too plain. What do you reckon to the Meg 250?

The 250 didn't win hot hatch of the year 2 years running for no reason and is definitely a step up from the Civic and a Focus ST, both of which I test drove before the 250.
Things you'll want as extras is the cup pack, if you don't get the 250Cup, and the RS Monitor.
Definitely don't regret paying 20k on it and has been utterly faultless since I got it in January. X x

Had mine now since March '10. Still love it as much as the day I picked it up.
Mine's been mapped by RS Tuning in Leeds and is happily running 300bhp. I was overtaking Porsche Cayman S's, Lotus Elises, Scoobys and a Mountune Focus RS at Snetterton in Febuary. It's a fantastic car.
tested a 250 in their "Best B Road Cars" test and it was 2 seconds quicker than a Competion Pack M3 V8 round Millbrook and only 0.05secs slower than the RS5. You simply can't get better for the money.

Dont want to sound like im rubbishing your calim but that doesnt sound right. The RS5 isnt quicker than the M3 by any stretch, especially on the track. It corners like a 2 legged dog compared to the //M, its nowhere near as well balanced and it weighs much more. The AWD of the quattro drains power through drivetrain losses very quickly whereas the BMW's are incredibly efficient, keeping as much of the power on the road as is mechanicaly possible. The power is very comparable too so the power to weight comparison is much in favour of the //M. The Comp Pack M3 isnt as good as the standard M3 unless you are properly on the limit but it still knocks the socks off of the RS5 in every scenario other than the traffic light GP. I know this from experience having come from an RS6 to an M5. The RS6, RS5 or RS4 might sound better on paper but in all honesty its the finely tuned chassis of the //M marque that gives them the advantage where they might have lost out to the RS on torque.
Im glad the Meg is holding its own in this field. Its not every day the French can say they are matching the germans in this game. I'd be interested to see this for myself though.
Thanks for the response,
Eddie

Can't attest to the validity of those times....

Those times are vey interesting but I just can't get my head around them. Quicker than a Lambo? Erm I struggle with that one if I'm honest. If I had an M3 and found myself being taken by a Renault Meg (no offence) then I'd be taking my keys back to the dealer.
If the Renault is that good, I'll be leaving the wfe with the M5 and I'll be claiming the 'big yellow' for my own.

Here's the Nurburgring bridge to gantry time of a slightly tweaked one.Astonishingly capable cars, although I must question whether the subtlety of this car might be lost on somebody who thinks a front-engined, FWD Alfa handles like a rear-engined, RWD Porsche? You lost me on that one.
Had an itch for a hot hatch for a while, looked at everything except renaults for the last couple of months (for no reason other than ignorance). Passed the local Renault dealer yesterday and a yellow megane was parked on the ramp, a quick lesson in the difference between the Cup and the Renaultsport, a short test drive and a call to the bank and I'm now the proud owner of a Cup - collecting tomorrow! This is the car:

I bought my Cup car last year but only just started to use it and I must say it is a very good all-round package, not been on track with it yet, but look forward to it.
An autosport article that was published last year to find the best of 10 very very good cars will give an indication of the cars ability. In the company of the latest Noble, A 430 Ferrari, 997 GT something or other, its was not put to shame, think it came 5th?
From what the test suggests, the OP would be giving his keys back to the BM dealer. Ferrari and 997 were pushing 109-100 mph through the Craner curves at Donington, the Megane, 108.5
It's the only car I think I've not seen a bad rod test for.

oyster grey m8ty,
leather recaros, visi pack, cup suspension,rs monitor, arkamys 3d,
i think as with any car, you can presume re map's are a warranty pull up item, unless otherwise stated, having said that fit an exhaust, intercooler, and a remap at rs tuning and you will see 300 horses,

Been to have a quick look at these today, I saw a yellow car at the Bournemouth dealer which has the 19in wheels and the Recaros, which are a very nice seat. The Portsmouth dealer had a white one on site and it is a good colour for it, they also have a grey one which is thier demo, but it wasn't on site.
I would love to get one in liquid yellow, but it doesn't seem that they currently offer it on the Megane?
I wouldn't mind a moonroof either, has anybody seen one?
