Needs the particulate fluid or filter changed IIRC. I know the C5 has some sort of additive in the tank and that uses the same engine. Potentially expensive (relatively) but could be used as a bargaining tool for the right car. £1100's quite cheap for one of those isn't it?

Left £50 depo but after reading internet horror stories i'm loath to go back!

Is it dealer only fix?

Its a grey area on the Fords, I know that. Grey because only the dealers could supply the parts, but normal indy garages were carrying out the repairs. There may be a reset needed on the ECU which usually leads people to believe it's dealer only. I don't know enough to be sure I'm afraid, but it's worth an investigation on the right car. Check out www.frenchcarforum.com (or .co.uk) if it's still running - most on there are well educated.

It's not dealer only, they can be removed, soaked overnight in traffic film remover, jet washed and refitted and the elyos oil refilled.
I send my customers to a guy in lincoln who replaces them and tops up the fluid for about £540+vat depending on model.
